What Exactly Should Be Done?

Allahpundit makes a very cogent assessment of the debate, one which I pretty much agree with.

For all they preach about their love of Science and Reason, the Left’s instinctive response is invariably emotive Nanny-Statism.

Just Some Thoughts

Words just simply fail to capture the horror of Friday. I can not grasp what sort of depravity would lead someone to slaughter those children like that (let alone the adults, of course) and I guess that’s a good thing; one would not at all like to be anywhere along that road.

But there is one thing that I do know: you can not expect the police to defend you from such a person. As Insta likes to say: “when seconds count, the police are minutes away.”

It appears that in this case as in many of the others this scumbag specifically went to a “Gun Free Zone” because he knew he’d have no resistance. The lambs were quite literally there in their pens for the slaughter with no earthly shepherd to protect them. Those poor dear teachers and administrators did all they were trained and allowed to do in those long long minutes when they were defenseless and alone, and so many died. As it seems is the MO on these things he shot and shot until he heard the sirens approaching, then he shot himself. Again, the police arrived in great force with nothing to do but clean up.

You can not depend on the police to help you in situations like this. For better or worse there is obviously a period of time required for them to be informed about the incidence and arrive on scene, and they also are creatures of their own training and procedures which more and more stress coordination and scene-assessment before they actually do anything. I’m not questioning their bravery or dedication to the people they serve but I am questioning their priorities. One of the saddest and most infuriating videos I’ve ever seen came out after the murders at Virginia Tech. Assuming the tape and soundtrack are unedited you hear gunshots going off in the classroom as the bastard is murdering people…and the police are crouched down behind their cars outside, talking on their radios. In the horrific Petit home invasion the police wasted more than half an hour while the family was being raped and murdered setting up their vehicle perimeter. You can not count on the police, and the criminals know it.

You can only count on yourself.

If you are armed you need to be physically and mentally prepared to act.

If you are not armed you must accept the following it seems to me: if you actively resist your attacker(s) you might die.

If you do nothing you will die.

40 Years Ago Today

Apollo XVII was headed home from the moon as the final lunar mission the United States would ever launch neared it’s successful, poignant end.

Who ever thought they’d live to see a man on the moon?

NOW there are no Americans atop rocket boosters on our soil going anywhere fast and far away for ANY reason, PERIOD.

I never thought we’d live to see that day.

Ebola’s Been Home For a Week Now

And we’ve loved every moment we’ve gotten to see him. Yes, it’s a new experience sharing him with his gorgeous wife and my new ADORABLE, BRILLIANT, damn-near-edible six-year old grandson, but it hasn’t been hard. Isn’t that weird?

But with that sweet pumpkin of a child wrapped into our little family, I spent Friday furtively hiding my sniffling at work, because all I could see was his face as the numbers of dead babies kept climbing.

Tiny children.

What sort of monster slaughters children? The littlest ones?

And it turns out it’s yet another twisted, inverted, sad little demon creature who did it.

Today I got to listen to Mike Lupica on ESPN’s Sports Reporters explain how the 2D Amendment was written for muskets and Carolyn McCarthy ~ God bless her and what she suffered through ~ relive her own heartache on Sunday Morning, crying out for justice for “the gun victims”.

GUN victims.

How about, as Ace so aptly called it, the “Cuckoo for Fucking Cocoa Puffs” crazies’ victims (a post which seems to have vanished)? Having a fair amount of personal experience dealing with someone in the bi-polar/paranoid schizophrenic world, and, knowing they have every option, every advantage and every protection, and your average citizen has NONE in the interest of protecting said CfFCP individual’s “rights”, I could never blame the blunt instrument at their disposal when they go all whirling dervish. It could be words, a lawyer, a fist, a piece of wood, knife or a gun ~ no matter. Whatever was either first at hand in yet another uncontrolled, VIOLENT flash of anger, or most glamorous featured weapon in the fevered revenge schemes they weave in the tortured dreams in their heads. And sometimes whip themselves into the courage to play act on.

Dreams that society has stripped itself of the right to question and protect itself FROM. All I ever wanted was a way to protect myself and mine. One lunatic in the family ~ and yes, I said the L word ~ can hound you to the grave with no respite. Like a Zombie incapable of sustained reason, they recognize nothing ~ neither court orders nor “The End”, because the songs play over and over in their heads. A perpetually frantic “GroundHog Day” with no end to the rewind and hence no reason to control…anything. Caretakers live in a special Hell, God bless them. Walls of love and fear and suffering.

And then there are, as Drew says, the “simply not wired right”, who are STILL a DANGER and become more-so every day as they mature. Walls of love and fear and suffering as that child grows to adulthood, withdraws ~ or is withdrawn ~ from what little society he could cope with to begin with. He frightens people with his rages, hurting himself, others. And he grows into them, not out of them.

It’s not the guns.

It’s the crazy.

What The Hell

Perhaps 27 dead, including 18 children

NEWTOWN—
Twenty-seven people, including 18 children, have been killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to the Associated Press.

The report cites an official with knowledge of the situation.

Sources told The Courant that there are at least 20 shooting victims. Many of the shootings took place in a kindergarten classroom, sources said.

One entire classroom is unaccounted for, sources said.

Rob Parker added a new, unexpected canard to the Robert Griffin III conversation on Thursday morning. In yet another mindless round of conversation on ESPN’s “First Take,” Parker took up the issue of RGIII, whom the rookie quarterback voted for, and his fiance, who is white.

“Is he a brother, or is he a cornball brother,” Parker asked. “I keep hearing these things. We all know he has a white fiancée. There was all this talk about he’s a Republican.”

If this Parker fellow were white he’d be unemployed by now, and rightly so.

Wall Street Worries Washington Will Wreck Economy – CNBC Survey

Wall Street’s concerns about Washington are escalating, with the December CNBC Fed Survey finding growing investor angst about a recession, the fiscal cliff and the Fed’s monetary policy.

The 48 economists, fund managers and strategists who responded to the survey rank the “fiscal cliff” as the top threat facing the U.S. economy and, partly as a result, put the chance of recession in the next year at a 13-month high of nearly 29 percent.

…Chris Rupkey of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi said the Fed “wrecked the money market and now their actions are wrecking the bond market… As long as they keep doing this it tells the public the economy is still not right in their view. This policy is starting to look like a mistake.

Spam Of The Day

in the room, ivories, enamels, miniatures, all sorts of monstrosities from Japan, from India, from Timbuctoo . . . for all I know. . . . He pushed his condescension so far as to have the `Girl in the Hat’ brought down into the drawing-room— half length, unframed. They put her on a chair for my mother to look at. The `Byzantine Empress’ was already there, hung on the end wall—full length, gold frame weighing half a ton. My mother first overwhelms the `Master’ with thanks, and then absorbs herself in the adoration of the `Girl in the Hat.’ Then she sighs out `It should be called Diaphanit, if there is such a word. Estate planning The “New” French Way: Make sure your relatives take your teeth.

Paris hit by wave of street muggings and grave robberies
Austerity-struck Paris has been hit by a wave of street muggings and grave robberies with thieves prepared to exhume bodies to steal gold and jewellery.

Last week, police in the French capital arrested three people as part of a widening grave robbery investigation.

There was further public outrage after two masked intruders shot dead a 52-year old precious metal worker when he tried to stop them stealing gold from his foundry in the chic central Parisian district of Le Marais.

Police said sky-high market prices for precious metals are acting as a magnet for thieves with scant regard for the living or the dead.

In Pantin cemetery, in the north of Paris, dozens of bodies have recently been dug up, with gold teeth and jewellery stolen from them.

…Last month, four other men – three from the same Pantin cemetery – were arrested and placed under investigation for aggravated theft, grave robbery and violating the integrity of a corpse.

According to a source close to the investigation, the men removed personal belongings from corpses in the freshest graves, opening them in the dead of night.

Two of the men were caught wearing miner’s helmets and gloves. Their boots were covered in fresh earth.

One of the suspects was found to be carrying 10 gold teeth.

This Is Very True; I See It Every Day

Many many businesses remain closed

There is now more deserted office space in Lower Manhattan because of Hurricane Sandy than there are offices in many cities. Mobile boilers line the streets. Portable generators are stacked to the curbs. Ventilation tubes coil around scaffolds, snake above sidewalks, quiver and pulse. It is as if bodies had been turned inside out, exposing the hearts, lungs and organs that are normally internal. Of course, these devices keep the buildings running in some limited ways. Still, 15 million to 18 million square feet of space is unusable, about as much as exists in any condition whatsoever in cities like Miami, Phoenix and San Diego.

There are hundreds of small businesses that aren’t coming back, thousands out of work.

December 7

I’d like to repost something I wrote on the 27th of November, 2007. For perspective…on heroes.

Sometimes You Read ABout the Neatest People

…in the local obituaries. We lost Mr. FRANK E. ZIELINSKI (1915 – 2007) this October 24th. He was a drummer. Now, it’s only a couple lines of his story, but they speak volumes

…After high school he enlisted in the Navy as a musician, a drummer. He served as a Musician for 23 years retiring in 1959.
Frank was serving on board the USS Nevada at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked.

His band completed the flag raising ceremony while under attack and then manned their battle stations.

don’t you think?

Hit by 1 aerial torpedo and 6, or more, bombs during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Nevada was beached in the harbour entrance to prevent sinking. She rejoined the fleet a year later, after repairs and refitting at Puget Sound Navy Yard.

Bless you, sir, and our condolences to your family.

Heroes and, as I’m sure Mr. Zielinski and countless others that day would say, guys just doing their duty.

Citi said the cuts come as it attempts to further reduce expenses and improve efficiency.

Enough ‘We’re All Responsible for Acts of Horror’ Nonsense

…Okay, once and for all: Enough with this ‘we’re all to blame, we must all struggle to prevent tragedy’ bullcrap. Because none of us had anything to do with the actions of Jovan Belcher. You and I and every other reader of this newsletter and about 99.999 percent of the American people prevent these sorts of tragedies every day… by not committing them, and by never seriously contemplating considering them. We are not all ticking time bombs, one stressful day away from committing mass murder. If we were, civilization would collapse.

…In the parking lot of the practice facility at 1 Arrowhead Drive, Belcher encountered Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. Belcher stepped out of his Bentley with a gun pointed at his own head, police said.

“I did it,” he said, according to police. “I killed her.”

Club officials knew about the couple’s problems. The Chiefs had provided counseling and “were bending over backward” to help, Sharp said.

But Belcher told Pioli that the assistance wasn’t enough to fix their problems and now, “It was too late.”

You mean THAT paragon of teachable moments?
