Last year he famously switched allegiance from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama during the Democratic nomination process for president. Now, he reveals, he regrets his change of heart. How’s Obama doing? “Dreadfully. I was hopeful. He was the most intelligent person we’ve had in that position for a long time. But he’s inexperienced. He has a total inability to understand military matters. He’s acting as if Afghanistan is the magic talisman: solve that and you solve terrorism.” America should leave Afghanistan, he says. “We’ve failed in every other aspect of our effort of conquering the Middle East or whatever you want to call it.” The “War on Terror” was “made up”, Vidal says. “The whole thing was PR, just like ‘weapons of mass destruction’. Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez and Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi have joined forces to urge the world to redefine “terrorism”.

After a summit last weekend for African and South American leaders on the Venezuelan island of Margarita, the two leaders signed a document rejecting attempts to link terrorism to ”the legitimate struggle of the people for liberty and self-determination”.

While emphasising the importance of attacking terrorism “in all its forms, including state terrorism”, the controversial duo called for an international conference to establish a new definition for the concept of terrorism.

Sounds like a clown convention…clowns who unfortunately cause their citizens endless misery.

Oh, and speaking of clowns:

Mr Chávez earlier also singled out Zimbabwe’s leader, Robert Mugabe, for praise during the summit meeting over the weekend. “I wish to give our moral, spiritual and political support to Mugabe and the people of Zimbabwe,” Mr Chávez said. “They seek to make Mugabe pay for being anti-colonialist.”

Ah yes, wise leader Mugabe, under whose enlightened tutelage Zimbabwe has gone from being the bread basket of Africa to it’s basket case.

NBC Does Some Creative Editing Last Night

The girl testified that she left the Jacuzzi and entered a bedroom in Nicholson’s home, where Polanski sat down beside her and kissed the teen, despite her demands that he “keep away.” According to Gailey, Polanski then performed a sex act on her and later “started to have intercourse with me.” At one point, according to Gailey’s testimony, Polanski asked the 13-year-old if she was “on the pill,” and “When did you last have your period?” Polanski then asked her, Gailey recalled, “Would you want me to go in through your back?” before he “put his penis in my butt.” Asked why she did not more forcefully resist Polanski, the teenager told Deputy D.A. In NBC’s piece last night, there’s a quick mention of a “sex crime” in Lester Holt’s intro, right before they cut to the “revered director” who is now “sitting in a Swiss jail”. They distill the revolting, predatory acts in the paragraphs above to:

Is that all? Well, dang! Your average viewer would be experiencing a “well, big deal” moment right about then. A Newsweek film critic explains helpfully that Polanski was always concerned about an arrest possibility…

PITTSBURGH – Riot police turned back hundreds of protesters trying to march downtown on the first day of the Group of 20 summit Thursday, arresting nearly 20 people as authorities braced for smaller, scattered protests at dozens of businesses and organizations Friday morning.

Police, in an overwhelming show of force, declared the march illegal almost as soon as it began, firing rubber bullets and canisters of pepper spray and smoke after small bands of anarchists responded to calls to disperse by rolling huge metal trash bins, throwing rocks and breaking windows.

Man I love asparagus, especially when it’s grilled. Usually I marinate it in balsamic vinegar and lime juice beforehand, but the other day I saw a recipe involving pig.

Bernard said that in one of his last phone calls from Afghanistan, his son had complained that his unit had been denied supporting fire and that Marines had been wounded.

“They are in between a rock and a hard place, with minimal support and maximum exposure,” Bernard said in a telephone interview. “With 175 guys there and then to be denied fire missions is inexplicable,” he said, describing his son’s company, stationed near the Taliban sanctuary of Now Zad in Helmand. “We’ve hamstrung ourselves in fear of angering a population that hates us anyway.”

Oh, words fail. I would be sick with grief and rage.

Though I pretty much am every night the NewsHour presents pictures of the brave souls who, through their deaths, made the “Honor Roll”. major dad and I stop everything to watch those pictures with names and hometowns scroll by. It’s their due, at the very least ~ our quiet moment and gratitude. And, while I know it’s not possible on this physical plane, I hope somehow in the existential one that the heartbroken mom or dad who sent that picture in knows that we watched and read every name. Every age. Every hometown and every service. And noted every theater where they lost their baby boy or schweet baby girl for us.

But how is it to be born, how is that terrible loss to be reconciled, if you feel that the actions of those responsible for the well being of your Marine or soldier consciously put him in more peril? As a matter of policy, devalued that precious life to appease a culture that values life very little, worthy only as a bargaining chip to their own ends?

I would be crazy with rage. This has to change.
