Stern Advice: Tax apocalypse in your retirement account
Amid all the gloom and doom about forced retirement, skyrocketing healthcare costs and nest egg-cracking financial markets, there’s another threat facing baby boomers: future tax liabilities.
The generation that has depended solely on 401(k)s and tax-deferred individual retirement accounts may not realize how much of a tax hit it will take when it starts withdrawing the money and living on it.
With the prospect of rising tax rates after the Bush tax cuts expire, some retirees could find themselves paying even more in taxes than they did when they were working. “It continues to surprise our clients that taxes are that big of an expense in retirement,” says Mark Davis of SunTrust Investment Services, Inc.
He estimates that clients who optimize retirement withdrawals to minimize their taxes can end up with as much as 33 percent more to spend in retirement years than they would if they ignored the impact of taxes.

…Ever be on anyone’s “Vice President” short list; except maybe Obama’s
No more super-sized Cokes. Forget about 64-ounce stomach-busting sodas at KFC. Even 20-ounce Snapples are on Mayor Bloomberg’s latest heath-conscious hit list.
In a dramatic move to reduce obesity, the city is going to become the first in the nation to impose a 16-ounce limit on the size of sweetened beverages sold in food establishments that receive letter grades from the Health Department, as well as mobile food carts.
The list includes more than 20,000 restaurants, as well as movie theaters, stadiums and arenas.
Bloomberg posed for a photo-op yesterday where he used sugar cubes as props to highlight how sugary the drinks are.

Good news: Obama alienates Poland by referring to “Polish death camps”
Hey, it’s not like they’re a close ally and a keystone of our eastern European policy. The only person angrier than the Poles tonight, incidentally: Ed Morrissey, who’s being deprived of a golden Obamateurism item for tomorrow morning. Sorry, buddy!
The bad news? This isn’t the only dumb, offensive thing that a prominent Democrat has said about Poland this week. The worse news? When I say he’s alienated Poland, I don’t mean he’s alienated a few bloggers in Warsaw or the editorial page of some partisan newspaper. The outrage goes to the very top
Oh wait, sorry, the MSM is of course completely ignoring this because Trump talking to Blitzer about Birther crap is obviously of much greater importance to our country than our relationship with our strongest ally on the European continent.
But what really strikes me about this video is how bad, how truly awful Obama is as a speaker. Look at the video: he’s like a robot looking from teleprompter to teleprompter, never makes any attempt to look at the audience, and they’re so far apart all we see are the two sides of his head.
(Reuters) – Spain’s borrowing costs lurched higher and the Madrid stock market hit a nine-year low on Wednesday as investors rattled by deepening fears about its banking system fled to the relative haven of German bonds.
Spain’s banking woes – the result of a burst property bubble aggravated by recession – have combined with growing uncertainty about Greece’s survival in the euro zone to reignite Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, driving the euro to a two-year low of $1.2454. European shares also extended their fall after Italy paid heavily to sell bonds.
Madrid said it will probably tap credit markets to inject funds into nationalized lender Bankia, but that looks expensive with 10-year borrowing costs at 6.67 percent near their euro era peak and close to levels at which Ireland and Greece sought international bail-outs.
The Economy Ministry played down a Financial Times report that the European Central Bank had rejected an initial plan to rescue Bankia, Spain’s fourth biggest bank, by stuffing it with government bonds that could be used as collateral to borrow from the ECB.
Walmart manager of store that forced vets to leave apologizes
BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Walmart employees in Elizabethtown called the police Sunday to make sure some veterans handing out poppies in honor of Memorial Day would leave the store. Now, the manager of that Walmart has called and apologized to Veterans of Foreign Wars, saying that he would do anything possible for the group.
Many people were outraged the vets were told to hit the road, but Walmart employees said they were just following store policy.
According to a spokesperson for Walmart, groups who want to solicit in front of their stores must be approved and scheduled in advance and only one group is allowed to reserve a table at a time.
VFW member Bobby Ludlum thought the organization had booked a space weeks in advance, but the store had no record of it and booked another group.
Little old men with red paper poppies? MEMORIAL Day weekend? And you call Der POLIZEI?!?!?!?
Naked man who tried to rip the flesh off another man on MacArthur Causeway identified
The man who viciously chewed away the face of another man on the MacArthur Causeway had a minor criminal record before Saturday’s attack.
The naked man who tried to eat another man’s face before he was shot dead by police was identified Monday.
Police sources confirmed that the attacker was 31-year-old Rudy Eugene. His name was first reported by WPLG-ABC?10.
…The macabre scene unfolded about 2 p.m. Saturday on the MacArthur Causeway’s off-ramp to Biscayne Boulevard just south of the Miami Herald building. A Road Ranger spotted the men and shouted on his loudspeaker for the naked attacker to back away.
One witness said he was riding his bicycle on the MacArthur when he saw a man tearing off pieces of the victim’s flesh with his mouth. After an officer approached, Larry Vega told WSVN-FOX7,
“The guy just stood, his head up like that, with pieces of flesh in his mouth. And he growled.”
…An emergency room doctor at Jackson Memorial Hospital said Eugene’s attack could have been induced by bath salts, a drug nicknamed after the bathroom product it resembles.
Police theorized earlier that it was “cocaine psychosis,” a drug-induced craze that bakes the body internally and often leads those it affects to strip naked to try to cool off.
So he was crazy wi’ either the heat or Jean Naté?
I’m looking a tad more critically at the things in my bathroom.
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) — A hospital in northern Afghanistan admitted 160 girls Tuesday after they were poisoned in their classrooms with a type of spray, a Takhar police official said.
The incident, the second in a week’s time, was reported at the Aahan Dara Girls school in Talokhan, the provincial capital.
Last week, more than 120 girls and three teachers were admitted to a hospital after a similar suspected poisoning.
Girls hospitalized after poison attack
“The Afghan people know that the terrorists and the Taliban are doing these things to threaten girls and stop them going to school,” Aseer said last week. “That’s something we and the people believe. Now we are implementing democracy in Afghanistan and we want girls to be educated, but the government’s enemies don’t want this.”
But earlier this week, the Taliban denied responsibility, instead blaming the U.S. and NATO forces for the poisonings in an attempt to “defame” the insurgent group.
I have no idea how long this was sitting in the back fridge…4-5 years easily. I bought this split and must have put it in there ahead of some party hoping someone else would want some dessert wine (my Bride doesn’t really care for them) and then I forgot about it. It held up pretty well: thick and luscious melon and honey flavors, but the acidity was pretty much gone. As is the bottle. Oops! I hate when I have to drink it by myself…good thing it was only 375ml.
I wonder if the Bottle King has another bottle lying about…
Naked man killed by Police near MacArthur Causeway was ‘eating’ face off victim
One man was shot to death by Miami police, and another man is fighting for his life after he was attacked and his face allegedly half eaten, by a naked man on the MacArthur Causeway off ramp, police said.
The bloodshed began about 2 p.m. when a series of gunshots were heard on the ramp, which is along NE 13th Street, just south of The Miami Herald building. Witnesses said a woman saw the two men fighting and flagged down a police officer who was in the area.
The officer, who has not been identified, approached and saw that the naked man was actually chewing the other man’s head, according to witnesses. The officer ordered the naked man to back away, and when he continued the assault, the officer shot him. The attacker continued to eat the man, despite being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing. Witnesses said they heard at least a half dozen shots.
…Read the piece and see for yourself. It is long, exhaustive and deeply misleading. This goes beyond bias; it is the most foolish and self-defeating propaganda. If you want to know why liberals are so frequently surprised by events that other people saw coming, why so many well educated and well meaning people are so pathetically clueless about American politics and American culture — read this piece.
Their level of cocooning isn’t a surprise in the traditional sense ~ I suppose you could say it’s more a source of perpetual bemusement…and frustration for those of us who have to present established fact as bright and shiney new concept to unbelievers because they hadn’t heard it in their trusted, closed circles. But as VRM says in this blogpost, once you’ve forgotten to mention all the facts in the case ~ regardless of how you choose to slant them ~ you’ve forfeited your “journalist/paper of record” title and succumbed to the siren song of “advocate”. You lose much in the process. The respect of your able and honorable adversaries, for starters.

…Booker, who has fundraised heavily from the financial-services sector and is a player in the private-equity-financed, education reform movement, has been eyeing statewide office for years. He is believed to most covet the governor’s office, although he would never challenge Gov. Chris Christie, who’s been a political friend and has deftly moved to co-opt the Newark mayor, unless the Republican was truly vulnerable.
A potential Lautenberg challenge is seen as likelier — and it’s a fact of which that the senator is keenly aware. Following Booker’s comments, the 88-year-old senator went on a media tour to rub salt in the wounds after the mayor’s walk-back, which was made after national Democrats contacted him.
“Now we have a different record,” Lautenberg cheerily told Roll Call of the difference between himself and Booker, accusing Booker of “sabotage” against the president.

So how’s that old Arab Spring going? You remember – the “Facebook Revolution.” As I write, they’re counting the votes in Egypt’s presidential election, so by the time you read this the pecking order may have changed somewhat. But currently in first place is the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi, who in an inspiring stump speech before the students of Cairo University the other night told them, “Death in the name of Allah is our goal.”
In second place is the military’s man, Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak’s last Prime Minister and a man who in a recent television interview said that “unfortunately the revolution succeeded.”
In third place is moderate Islamist Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a 9/11 Truther endorsed by the terrorist organization al-Gama’a al-Islamiya. He’s a “moderate” because he thinks Egyptian Christians should be allowed to run for the presidency, although they shouldn’t be allowed to win.
