Facebook News Again

Facebook to let advertisers republish user posts
Associated Press | Posted: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 3:36 pm

Facebook users who check in to a store or click the “like” button for a brand may soon find those actions retransmitted on their friends’ pages as a “Sponsored Story” paid for by advertisers.

Currently there is no way for users to decline this feature.

Gotta watch those guys…

Geez. You know, Facebook pissed me off with a privacy issue back in October and I pretty much blew it off for the last three months. I finally started edging back in this week and now this? Watch those guys indeed.

I’m thinking of cutting it off. I like seeing friends, but that company creeps me out.

Unfortunately, this is the way most of my family insists on communicating. I keep my personal info to an absolute minimum. And even then I wonder…..

(I have not dived into Twitter, texting, etc, even though I’ve been a computer power user for decades. I’ve learned that willingly sticking a wire up my rear end is no way to go through life.)

What’s really silly about these social networks are how government agencies are jumping into the fray. Oh, it’s good advertising, I get that. But I’ve had people seriously suggest that we use FB and Twitter for *official* communications.

When I point out that some things can’t (or shouldn’t) be public, their eyes glaze over. That’s when I earn my reputation as a cranky curmudgeon.

I’m with JeffS – except my family luckily does not insist on communicating via social networks (other than telephone).

No facebook account here, and no twitter either.

As for the official communications thing… had to explain to the company I worked for that PUBLISHING Google docs really was NOT a good idea. (Sigh) I couldn’t talk them out of using them – but at least they are no longer world-readable.
