Egypt

So, who still thinks it’s a great idea to give the President an internet kill switch?

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) — Hours ahead of what are expected to be massive displays of anti-government ferment across the world’s most populous Arab nation, the internet went dark in parts of Egypt early Friday, and text messaging appeared to be blocked.

…According to multiple web services that check whether servers used by specific sites are active, the servers of Egypt’s main internet provider were down early Friday.

The servers for the Egyptian government’s sites and for the U.S. Embassy in Cairo also appeared to be down.

ths UPDATE: Via jake Tapper’s Twitter feed, the White House weighs in on Egypt, just as Syria starts shutting down its internet:

jaketapper Jake Tapper
RT @PressSec: V concerned about violence in Egypt – govt must respect the rights of Egyptian people & turn on social networking and internet

Hilarious considering he wants the same switch.

O thought of this two years ago. This is the difference between the First and Third worlds.

    He wants a switch…badly.

I find the idea of an Internet kill switch scary as hell.

I read that ham radio operators are getting their units out and trying to spread information…guess it’s harder to block the radiowaves.

Oh, we’ve been getting our gear out for a long time, ricki. For any emergency. This is intended for natural disasters, mind you.

And thanks to the ingenuity and dedication of hams, we can now provide limited e-mail in case of INTERNET loss as well.

I’m considering going and getting some ham equipment and a license. Sigh. And will do so if he gets that switch.
