    Actually, Winston, when the perennially-in-debt Mr. Jefferson was building the University of Virginia he couldn’t afford to build straight runs of brick walls, as that would require too many bricks. By designing the ‘serpentine’ walls he was able to get the needed strength from walls that were only 1 brick thick.

    Pretty neat for 1819 🙂

    Here is actually Mr. Jefferson’s design in his own hand and you can see his calculations on the number of bricks he needed.

    Just think what Obama University will look like. Since he just towers over Jefferson I’ll bet he does twice the wall with half the brick. He is an expert in working in brick so I excpect big things.

    Yanno, I’m of the though that doesn’t much care what it looks like, as long as it works. And it looks like that’s still working fine.

    (Keep in mind, though, that I’m one of those who considers ““There, I fixed it.” to be a DIY how-to site…
