I suspect Obama, now that the media doesn’t have to protect him anymore, might start getting some FEEDBACK about his totally ineffectual government agencies…
IMO, that applies to former presidents as well. Bush, should have raised HELL on some governors – and didn’t.
(Jen Bush would have, George. Well, he’s a nice guy. Jeb is too, unless it comes down to disasters.) Said it before, will say it again, make Jeb head of FEMA. Do that, they MIGHT be worth something again.
And Jeb’s just honest enough to tell people ahead of time “don’t expect us to rescue you – we’re only here to hand out checks. “
Oh – and put up house-trailers. That’s all FEMA is good for. Checks and trailers. Don’t expect them to help clear a road blocked by trees, don’t expect water/ice/food. Don’t expect them to help dig out your mama/grandma/papa/grandpa/you from the ruins of the home. Checks, and cheap trailers. That’s what they do.
And when you see the damage to the rail beds, Kathy. Jeesh, such a mess. It looks like the pictures of the raiding parties during the Civil War…

Yeah, I saw that damage to the rail bedding, Mr. B; those lines aren’t opening for weeks. If they’re lucky, probably more like months. The other photos …… recovery is going to take time, even the “simple” clean up.
And note that I am not defending FEMA, but …… FEMA was never intended to be more than a stop gap measure, a helping hand up until the locals got on their feet. “Checks and trailers” are all they are supposed to do.
Now, FEMA is lousy at even that. Their mitigation program is pretty much a bust, because the state and local governments selectively ignore it. To their detriment.
Bush 43 should have gotten in their faces. As Bubba should have, who effectively started the program, when he rebuilt FEMA. After the impacts of Hurricane ANDREW were known in full. Instead, everyone has thumbed their noses at the concept.
And it ain’t just the east coast, folks. I can point to places within a couple hundred miles of my home with the potential for real problems.
I know that land is money, and land development is essential to a healthy economy. So I hope those railways are re-built with the next SANDY in mind.
Ya know, if that $800 billion Hopey Changey stimulus money had gone to bury power lines, things would be a lot easier in some places. But it went to pay off public employee unions instead. Heckuva job, Barry.
