GirlFRIEND!

After practicing with the fastest speed on Saturday, second-year driver Danica Patrick and the No. 10 car made history when she ran a 196.434 mph lap in Sunday’s qualifying session, securing the pole for the 2013 Daytona 500 on Feb. 24.

As they say, “you GO Girl!”

    Fast as you can. 😀

Danica has replaced my previous hero(ine) Denise McCluggage who I saw at Elkhart Lake in her polka dot helmet. What a girl!!!!

  3. Yojimbo says:

How about replacing these two with Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney who used to drive funny cars and then “graduated” into Top Fuel draqsters. The first woman to gain a Top Fuel license and the first person, not just a woman, to win multiple Top Fuel National Championships.

She deserves some love as well. She eclipsed both of the above mentioned.

Well, yes, but I didn’t have a blog then, Yo.

I love the track, and I look forward to the time when I can resume that hobby.

But we have to be honest and point out that being a good driver is partly skill, but mostly it is a factor of having the money to have a well designed and maintained vehicle and the time and money to practice, practice, practice.

This is why rich old men do so well, as do the sons of rich old men.

So now we’re seeing that a woman, if given enough time and financial support, can also get to the point of earning pole position.

I’m very happy for Danica. I admire her for her publicity campaign and her gumption. I think she is a great driver, and I don’t discount the personal bravery it takes to be one. I hope that more women get involved in racing. I want my daughter to do it too, if she would like.

And I hope that Danica continues to attract the funding that keeps her competitive, because that is the real driving force for a long term winning strategy.
