The Science Is Settled

Honestly, this is not a surprise

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts.

A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products — carries elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health disorders*.

Vegetarians were twice as likely to have allergies, a 50 percent increase in heart attacks and a 50 percent increase in incidences of cancer.

Anecdotally, and y’all well know that there is a direct link from God’s mouth to my anecdotes, basically every vegetarian/vegan I’ve ever known has been the sallowist looking, constantly sniveling, sickest and generally all-around most miserable person of my considerable acquaintance.

I am a firm believer that if our Wise Government is going to mandate anything with regard to Public Health that a requirement that each Citizen consume a minimum of One (1) Bacon Double Cheeseburger each week would be more salubrious to the General Welfare than 99% of the bloviated Nannyisms that currently assail us.

*frankly, this last may in fact be a pre-existing condition.

Philosophies like vegetarianism or veganism are noble, but fly in the face of reality. Human beings are omnivores. We evolved to have meat in our diet. So, yeah, no surprises here.

Have you ever noticed that many vegetarians/vegans also struggle with personal hygiene? They would be far better off if they smelled like a Big Mac, not to mention what good it would do for their disposition. Nothing like a large bucket of KFC to make one see all that is good in life.

“*frankly, this last may in fact be a pre-existing condition.” I think the question answers itself.

This whole post was worth the read just to see the use of the word, “salubrious”. A Jim Dandy of a word, if there ever was one. Good on ya, Mr. B. The irony is that it would be a real challenge to find a Vegan who knew what it meant.

  5. Julie says:

One of my favorite New Yorker cartoons shows a building along a lonely stretch of highway, with a sign “Welcome to Texas. Last Vegan Pizza for 750 miles.” That’s sure true. Vegans would starve here.

  6. Skyler says:

This begs the question as to whether these people have these problems because they are vegetarian, or whether they are vegetarian because they have these problems. If one is afflicted with chronic allergies and other maladies, then one might get into crackpot holistic medicine or vegetarianism in a desperate attempt to seek relief.

Or if they’re already sissies, they might become vegetarians rather than vegetarianism making them sissies.

  7. The researchers conclude: “Our study has shown that Austrian adults who consume a vegetarian diet are less healthy (in terms of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders)

Anecdotically (totally), people with mental health disorders are far more likely to go veg. Everybody I’ve ever met who was on the truly brutal psychoactives (& they’re never on just one, it’s always 5 or more bottles of various things including anticonvulsants & soporifics) would constantly flirt with (& occasionally practice) vegetarianism.

That’s not to say that all veg-nuts are crazy, but every crazy seems to think that being a veg makes you healthier.

My son went through a vegetarian phase for 6 years, from the age of 13 to 19.He was led into it by a ‘cool’ teacher.
College-life and a lack of money forced him out of it.
It caused problems in our relationship at the time.
Most people out-grow it. Just like others things.

  9. Mr. Bingley says:

Hahaha, I was waiting for you to show up, gregor!

    I did say “basically” 😉

You are, of course, the exception that proves the rule, and besides I’ve fed you enough beef and bacon over the years before your conversion to the dark side!
