“MIStah Hornblower! The t’gallants, if you please!”
I got me a serious Man Crush on Sir Edward.
Yes, we’ve watched that series a million times and I have to put up with Bingley’s vapors and sighs.
My vapors made their appearance long before the series ever aired…
Ah me! A longing for the days of sail? Why not try a short sail through the pages of the author himself, or a tack across the works of another maritime master?
Excepting of course that the pic is HMS Temeraire, not Indefatigable. Blasphemy!
Bingley’s a lubber, Steve. A boat’s a boat.
Read them all a million times, Mike. An excellent, epic suggestion to those who haven’t!
Oh damn, Steve, you’re right. There’s too many gun decks.
Here’s a proper model if the Indy.
And here’s a better painting.
I started reading age-of-sail fiction with the Hornblower series and then devoured Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin M&C books. I think O’Brian is head and shoulder above Forester in terms of characterization and technical detail, but there’s no one else in the genre that comes close to either of them.
