Bill Clinton Will Be Bidding…
…On a certain item in this collection
One of the largest collections of Sir Winston Churchill memorabilia, including an unsmoked cigar, is expected to fetch £1m at auction later.
Sadly, of course, Churchill memorabilia are now somewhat out of fashion in DC these days…
OK, how much is a 40-year-old cigar worth? Is it autographed or does the DNA on the soggy end prove it was his?
Sometimes a commemorative bust and a desk made from the timbers of a famous sailing warship are a commemorative bust and a desk made from the timbers of a famous sailing warship.
too funny.
this is what i enjoy the most about your blog, Mr. Bingley. you NEVER decline an opportunity to take a quick jab at Obama.
i know it’s all done in fun and laughter but i have to admit that i am significantly impressed with your sense of humor and knowledge.
it’s not unusual for any president to return items from the last administration, is there? i am sure all of obama’s items will be returned upon his exit.
i forgot to add: that must be quite a collection, the fact that it was amassed over three decades.
I wonder, don, what in all honesty the protocol is for gifts to be returned. Sure, different Presidents make some decor adjustments to the White House (rugs, certain furniture items, say some pictures on the mantle, perhaps buying new china and certainly every President has the right to remove any personal items of their predecessor’s) but it seems to me this Churchill bust really doesn’t fall into that category, does it?
I *hope* you will admit that I never (well, let’s say rarely, instead) decline an opportunity to take a quick jab at anyone. For example, while I freely admit to having a man-crush on Governor Christie I also must say that should he return the favor to me then I’d get squashed.
It seems to be a pretty huge collection, doesn’t it? It’s being sold in three parts, and the first part alone has something like 150 items.
Churchill was an extraordinarily fascinating man, who lived a life of amazing successes and catastrophic failures.
If Bill Clinton ever sells any of his “memorabilia”, stay away from the cigar humidors.
“i am sure all of obama’s items will be returned upon his exit.”
I’m sure his iPod full of his dreary speeches has already been overwritten with Amy Winehouse tunes and his incorrect region DVD gift box is currently propping up coffee table legs.
don – I seem to recall reading that the President accepts gifts on behalf of the people of the United States, and as such these items belong to them, and to the office. This is to prevent the outgoing President from simply keeping all the cool expensive stuff given by other heads of state. But I don’t think the protocol is simply to return them, either.
Maybe while looking for the Ark of the Covenant we would stumble across all the other stuff in those crates.
