The Circle Of Knives

An interesting article in The Chronicle of Higher Education on the infighting and theological purging going on in the Academy:

…Instead, in a time-honored ritual of the left, a number of academic polemicists choose this moment to pump up rites of purification. At a time when liberals hold next to no sway in any leading institution of national government, when the prime liberal institution of the last centuryorganized labor wobbles helplessly, when most national media tilt so far to the right as to parody themselves, the guardians of purity rise to a high pitch of sanctimoniousness aimed at … heretics. Liberals, that is.

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that the reason Archduke Ferdinand had to die was that he was a reformer, and reformers are the most dangerous people in the world to a political organization. So here you see the most polemic wings in Academe turn on each other to root out the heretics, the cursed “baby-boomer liberals” who are “a powerful force of accommodation.”
Funny, I seem to recall that accommodation and compromise were once powerful elements in our society, honored by the high and the low as tools of reason that made our Republic what it is. But that was in a time when our Republic was honored and respected by the Academy; now they quite clearly despise it for being built on “the atrocities launched by liberal capitalism” (as opposed to the Happy Rivers Of Chocolate and Gum Drop Smiles that the marxists have delivered everytime they’ve had the chance). And so we are subject to this seemingly unending stream of political tracts from petulant academics, frustrated at both the impotence of their political ideas and their low standing in the court of public esteem (ranking somewhere between Tonya Harding Videos and New Coke, I’d reckon), lashing out at those who would be the most American, those who would dare to compromise the Purity of Essence to make our society a better place. It’s ironic how the the pendulum has shifted on this, no? Now it seems to be the ones on the left who so crave the attention and adoration of the middle classes while expressing nothing but contempt for them and all they value.
So where does that leave our polity? You have the Academic hard left slashing away at eachother, the Democratic Party hard left splintering into various bickering factions, the ruling Republican Party spending like drunken sailors (no offense meant to the Navy) and no one generating any enthusiasm, and a great mass of the populace in between who really aren’t thrilled by any of the potential choices out there. I know I’m sure not. We may be at as prime a time for a serious third party run as we’ve ever seen, which makes it all the more important that the Evan Bayhs don’t get to put their ideas on the Electoral College in play.
Well, that’s enough of that ramble.

Uhm, dudes, there’s more to the MSM than Fox News. John Stossel is only one man…
Son of a gun do these twits actually live in the same universe as I do? It’s enough to make you reject the Copenhagen interpretation for the Manyworlds theory.
