The Democratic Party’s protectionist make-over was completed yesterday, when Nancy Pelosi decided to kill the Colombia free trade agreement. Her objections had nothing to do with the evidence and everything to do with politics, but this was an act of particular bad faith. It will damage the economic and security interests of the U.S. while trashing our best ally in Latin America.

(CNN) — American Airlines canceled more than 900 flights Thursday as it continues to perform safety inspections on certain jets.
American Airlines entered its third day of cancellations on Thursday.
It’s the third consecutive day of cancellations for American Airlines, which has apologized to customers and offered to make amends with refunds, vouchers, and compensation for overnight stays.
American also canceled several hundred flights for the same reason about two weeks ago.
Roger Frizzell, an airline spokesman, said the inspections involve technical compliance as opposed to flight safety.
I’ve never been a big fan of the DC-9 family, and when a spokesman says something weaselly like that my spider senses start to tingle even more.
It seems this “technical compliance” issue has to do with FAA directives on how electrical wires that direct the aircraft control systems are bundled as they go through the front wheel well into the cockpit. Evidently if this is done incorrectly the motion of the nose landing gear can cause damage to the wires which could effectively turn the plane into a very large aluminum brick.
The effect of this on ‘flight safety’ seems unclear according to Mr. Frizzell.

MARINES FACE LAST INSURGENT STRONGHOLD IN IRAQ’S ANBAR PROVINCE

The marines are now in a scramble to oust insurgents tied to Al Qaeda in Iraq. The mission’s priority was underscored by a recent visit to the outpost by Maj. Gen. It seems there may be an increased risk of lung cancer with inhaled insulin
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Pfizer Inc and Nektar Therapeutics said on Wednesday clinical trials of the inhaled insulin Exubera found increased cases of lung cancer, leading Nektar to end talks with potential partners to market the product.
Nektar shares tumbled 24 percent in early trading, while shares of MannKind Corp , which has been developing its own inhaled insulin, plummeted more than 56 percent. Pfizer was little changed at $21.00.
Over the course of the clinical trials, Pfizer said six of the 4,740 Exubera-treated patients versus one of the 4,292 patients not treated with Exubera developed lung cancer. One lung cancer case was also found after Exubera reached the market.
