Chestnuts Roasting On A Open Fire

well, actually, it was in a gas oven. There was a post last week at Al Dente on how to do it, so I figured why not.

Score an ‘x’ on each one

and pop into a 400 degree oven for 30 minutes

the skin/shell peels back nicely from the ‘meat’

Brains! We must eat the brains!

And here’s a nice wine to wash those brains down:

“Amitage” from Columbia Crest

a very nice blend: 64% Merlot, 19% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4.5% Malbec. For $10 an excellent, smooth wine with full body and fruit.

Now if only there was a fitting name for this color

Hmmm…

I have to say these suckers are very rich; I bought a pound and that was way too much. No wonder zombies move so slowly after eating them.

Next time I may roast them on the grill using birch or cherry to give them some smokiness.

Hooray! I bought roasted chestnuts from a street vendor once, and they were magical. (Though, that could have been that it was Bonfire Night, and I was in Lewes, East Sussex. And drunk.)

I need to find an online vendor for chestnuts. One of the trade offs to living in a nice, tiny, quiet, rural town is the limited availability of anything more than 2 steps away from being “a pantry staple”.

These were just sitting there in a bulk bin at our local ShopRong, Alice.

Most online vendors seem to be out of stock. Perhaps I need to send an order to you? But first, I’m checking with a few neighbors in hopes there may be some just lying about.

I see Claude in the background of the wine bottle photo, Mr. Bingley. Does he like a little red wine to go with his raw meat?

  5. Memories of my childhood: we used to have a stove that was half gas/half coal. My father used to x the chestnuts and lay them on the cast iron covers of the coal part. No chestnut will ever compare favorably to those.

Now you made me cry, Bingley.

Bless you for braving their parking lot, Bings.

I have never had chestnuts! Maybe this year I’ll roast some…

Yum! Mom used to put them in the toaster oven (obviously not a pound)–I’ve been thinking of surprising her with something, so thanks for the suggestion!
