Don’t Think for Two Seconds Israel Isn’t Watching This “Treaty” Play Out

South China Standoff

Growing tensions between Beijing, Manila over disputed fishing waters could lead to conflict

Tensions between China and the Philippines remain high and U.S. officials say the likelihood Beijing will take some type of military action is growing.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration has taken a hands-off approach to the dispute over a 10-mile square South China Sea lagoon called Scarborough Shoal and is not vocally supporting Manila in its dispute over fishing rights.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland repeated the administration’s previous position that it favors diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute and opposes the use of force.

However, a U.S. defense official said the Hawaii-based Pacific Command was ordered not to send U.S. Navy warships to the region to support the Philippines, whose naval forces are said to be very limited.

The United States signed a 1951 defense treaty with Manila called the Mutual Defense Treaty.

It’s only “mutual” in Obama’s eyes if HE needs THEM.

Right now we’d hand over a blind dissident to suck up to China if we thought it’d help, so what’s a couple miles of fishing reefs?

Oh, wait…

120 miles from the Phil coast…and over 500 miles from China.

How do you say “under the bus” in Tagalog?

  2. Gary from Jersey says:

Another finger in O’s eye. How the hell are we going to repair his damage?

  3. Ebola says:

I said we’d be at war with them in the next decade. I may need to lower that number.

  4. aelfheld says:

Keeping in mind his recent statements ‘mutual’ is, for him, a qualifier.

  5. mojo says:

Yeah, a “Mutual Defense” treaty from 1951?

Ignoring the “mutual” horselaugh, didn’t they, y’know’ boot us out rather unceremoniously later on?

Maybe Spain would be willing to help, huh?

“What are we supposed to use? Harsh language?”

    Mojo,
Yeah, the USN at Subic probably looks a bit different to them now than it did a couple of decades ago, when the only people in the PI who wanted us to stay were the hookers.

Franklin Roosevelt sold out Poland and the Baltic states in order to ‘suck up’ and befriend the mass murderer Stalin.”uncle Joe’ killed 25 million people.
Now we are sucking up to the Communist Chinese, because we are in debt for 4 trillion to them.Pathetic, Pathetic

  9. Ebola says:

I doubt the debt is really an issue. Right now it’s more likely a waiting match. While we’re massively downsized and engaged in multiple theaters opening up a new fight with someone that could go toe to toe with us in conventional conflict isn’t the brightest thing in the book. Don’t forget when we got involved in the European campaign during WWII Churchill pushed to hold back for time to garner intelligence and amass troops from 1942-1944 and he was entirely right.

Mind China is boasting a capable anti-carrier missile that the DoD is more than a bit wary of, meaning we can’t wade in a carrier into the area aggressively as is our usual wont in these situations. Nor can we afford to be the aggressors given our military position currently.
