Had to Put Our 2008 Dell ‘Puter Into the Hands of River Styx Ferryman Last Weekend

…with all due military honors, of course.

After grimly vowing to hold out, days later caving and picking out a cheap-o replacement to be built on Dell’s business site, then being forced by circumstances to check the NEX for a possible immediate replacement (and finding a superior system for $179 more, w/ no tax or shipping involved), I bit.

Immediate and FIRM first impression?

Windows 8 sucks SO BAD, it blows.

Well, they had to top Windows ME somehow…

  2. JeffS says:

I have a copy of Windows XP Professional, 64 bit, if you want it.

    ;-p

  3. Mr. Bingley says:

I have a couple macs you can choose from.

    One word: “Bob”

I mean, really guys? You didn’t make the touch-screen interface an install-time option? Because of all those touch screen monitors we all have, I guess, huh?

  5. mojo says:

If MS truly wanted to screw with the “Open Source” community: release the (fully patched) XP codebase, under the same terms as the Linux OS uses.

What the hell, they’re not supporting it anymore, and Win7/8 is a completely different codebase, right?

  6. Julie says:

Nightfly, PLEASE do not invoke that entity… It’s like repeating “Beetlejuice” 3 times. (shudder) It was installed on my old computer (may it rest in peace). NOTHING could be worse than that!

  7. Kathy Kinsley says:

Julie, from what I’ve heard from people using it, Windoze 8 IS at least as bad. Albeit, a lot bigger.
7’s usable – more so than Vista. But 8? Everyone I know that has 8 has problems.

  8. Crusader says:

I have a copy of Windows 2000 somewhere.

  9. Kathy Kinsley says:

Oh, and yes, I used ME – for a very short while.

  10. Kathy Kinsley says:

@Crusader-2000 wasn’t all that bad – I used that too for quite a while – at work. Quite usable as MS products go.

  11. Kathy Kinsley says:

@THS – see if you can find a windoze 7 on ebay. Or even XP…

  12. tree hugging sister says:

I loved 7. Could work happily away in it, no problems.

  13. Kathy Kinsley says:

Oh and if you find a 7, make it emulate XP desktop. Makes it a lot more usable.

  14. Kathy Kinsley says:

Get 7 then, it’s still around if you look. 8, as you said, BLOWS.

  15. Kathy Kinsley says:

I’m hanging on to my present 7 until 9 or 10 comes out – or I give up and switch totally to some UNIX version…

Heck, I hung onto Windows for Workgroups 3.11 until Win 98.

Windows HATES me. I won’t upgrade to their latest disaster.

Yeah, I can do it. Hung on to XP till 7 came out. Hung on to 98 until XP was stable (and that was a long time).
    Heck, I hung on

  16. Kathy Kinsley says:

And I’ll keep hanging till I switch to Ubuntu or Linux or whatever…

As soon as UNIX flavors can run programs I need – happening more lately, but still not enough. (I have to use comp for work, can’t afford to indulge my own preference.)

  17. JeffS says:

I’m on the move from Windows to Linux (Fedora for the moment), myself. I don’t like the direction that Windows is going.

  18. major dad says:

Poor THS, yep that new computer with 8 sucks, she’s been pretty vocal about it. MS should keep that fancy crap for the tablet crowd. My new laptop has 7 installed, thank God.

  19. nightfly says:

You knew 8 was gonna stink on ice… none of the commercials said word one about its features or its performance benchmarks. We got all this nonsense instead. OOOOOOH CLICKY WANT – as in, wanna barf.
