I Like Mussels

I really do. I mean, sure, I guess I’d drive to a couple different stores to find some if I felt the urge to make a batch.

But even I have my limits

The Inuit of Arctic Canada take huge risks to gather mussels in winter. During extreme low tides, they climb beneath the shifting sea ice, but have less than an hour before the water returns.

…The locals can only do this during extreme low tides, when sea ice drops by up to 12m (about 40 feet), opening fissures through which the exposed seabed – and its edible riches – can be glimpsed. The best time to go is when the moon is either full or brand new, as this is when the tide stays out the longest.

Filmed for the BBC’s Human Planet, they lower themselves into these temporary caverns to gather as many fat and juicy mussels as they can before the tide rushes back in.

They are insane.

Jeese Louise, maybe they do more to those muscles than eat them. It is, after all, a long, cold winter up there.

I can see that seal meat and blubber would get old real quick, but yikes.

  3. Julie says:

Yeah, I saw that episode… I’m claustrophobic and even watching it on TV scared me.

  4. Kathy Kinsley says:

Yikes indeed. But did you note the bit about eating dog meat?

That’s one thing I think the right should shut up about…

“And, he adds, a stranded arctic traveler can eat dog meat, if desperate. “More than one of the famous explorers has resorted to that solution.””

I’d HATE to be reincarnated as a sled dog…

Kathy good people may eat dog meat and horsemeat at need. After all they are animals and we are humans we can rationalize our existance is more important. But only the evil eat thier friends (and dogs and horses are our freinds they have made our survival and betterment possible) by CHOICE.

So I believe hitting the SCOAMF on eating dog is a valid attack.

It’s known as the great mussel tussle.

    Yum, yum.

BTW Bing, if you are ever down in Baltimore there is a place in the Fell’s Point area called “Bertha’s”. Outstanding mussels, they serve them in a bucket filled with the little bi-valves in a white wine and butter broth and plenty of fresh bread to sop up that broth. It’s great.

Hm, it looks like Squeeze missed a verse.

  9. Mr. Bingley says:

I’ll try and remember that, md. I really want to get down there to try the “pit beef” I hear a lot about!

    @Bill N

Umm. Go live over there for a while. Yeah, dog is a “choice” – so is cockroach and grasshopper and scorpion. People in that part of the world don’t have the choices you and I do.
