Navy submarine struck, loses periscope

Authorities said the Navy’s nuclear submarine USS Jackonsville suffered damage to its periscope in a collision with another vessel in the Persian Gulf.

…A Navy official told ABC News the periscope was likely sheared off by a fishing trawler.

He said the crew was conducting normal operations “when they felt a shudder.” The crew then pulled up the periscope and discovered the damage.

Somebody’s probably gonna be trawling for a desk job after this though

If memory serves, the Soviets had a bunch of ‘fishing trawlers’ that were frequently in the vicinity of American ships. What’s good for the commissars is likely good for the mullahs.

You’d think a Multi-Billion$$$ nuclear sub would have the technology necessary to avoid a !960″s fishing trawler. One would have to think that there’s more to this story and in all likelihood, none of it is good.

Probably true. But aelfheld has a point. As does Syd. Sounds fishy to me.

Not that fishy really, been a lot of sub collisions. There was one just last year in the Gulf and the periscopes are not like what they used to show in the movies, they are electronic now. There was one case where a sub traveling at pretty high speed hit an underwater mountain that wasn’t on the charts. Messed it up bad.

Holy mackerel, TRJ, not even Charlie the Tuna would bite on that one.

I’m with Aelfheld and Syd B. on this one. And don’t forget Chinese boats.
