No One Expects The Spanish Indigestion!

As they say, before you insult another man’s cucumber you’d best make sure that your own is up to snuff

HAMBURG (Reuters) – German-grown beansprouts could be the source of the deadly E.coli outbreak that has killed 22 people, made more than 2,200 ill and led Russia to bar EU fruit and vegetable imports, officials said on Sunday.

The Lower Saxony state agriculture minister, Gert Lindemann, told a news conference investigators had traced the rare, highly toxic strain of the bacteria to a farm in the Uelzen district. Media reports said the farm was near the town of Bienenbuettel, 70 km (40 miles) south of Hamburg.

So far 22 people have died and a couple of thousand have been sickened to varying degrees.

Not by “Big Agriculture.”

Not by our “overly commercial food industrial complex.”

Not by “Genetically Modified Plants of Doom.”

No, by what appears at this point to be sloppy practices at what some reports indicate was an organic farm in Germany.

Update: Oops, maybe not

BERLIN (AP) — German officials say initial tests show that sprouts from an organic farm in the country’s north are not the cause of the E. coli outbreak.

    Lava los manos, Organic Man!!!

Oddly enough, we were watching the Monster Hog Hunt on Discovery last night and they were after the same bunch of feral pigs that were the cause of the organic spinach e-coli outbreak a couple years ago. All it takes is one of those nasty critters traipsing through your pristine little field to kill people.

It reminds me of the New Yorker cartoon from a few years ago that I love:

Two cavemen are sitting in a cave chatting

“Something’s just not right—our air is clean, our water is pure, we all get plenty of exercise, everything we eat is organic and free-range, and yet nobody lives past thirty.”

Remember, organic usually means “shit” was used for fertilizer. Just sayin’…
