Couldn’t say it better than Mr. Steyn has.
Even during my tour, we learned not to trust the Afghan police and military that we worked with. On more than one occasion, a group of Afghans threatened our Marines at gun point. Our CO praised our guys for their restraint after one incident, but truth be told, it was a pretty brazen ambush and our guys didn’t have much choice. A gun was being held to a Marine’s head so there wasn’t much they could do without his head getting blown off.
The local Afghan commanders took no action in this and other encounters. And of course, the local Afghans often reported that the ANP were shaking them down for money and threatening them.
I have no idea why we are arming these people. They have no interest in showing appreciation or loyalty. It makes me sick.
There was, right after 911 – and, from the left as much as the right – talk of Lake Afghanistan. It would have been a lake of glass.
I was on the other side of that one. Then. Now, I’m not so sure.
