WordPress

I’m getting tired of MT and I’m considering changing the Swilling to WordPress.
Anyone have any experience/comments on that?

    Set aside a few hours and upgrade to MT 4.25. I have no problems with it and it wouldn’t be like starting all over again. I’ve seen a friend’s WordPress installation. I found it a bit limited but that’s been a while and I didn’t really get to give it a full workout. Perhaps that has improved.

    Thanks Rob. I’ve been talking to Hosting Matters, where we’re, um, hosted, and they tell me that MT uses a lot of resources and there are few problems with WordPress. I’ve been getting very frustrated with how slow it’s been, and the spate of double posts and system errors I’ve been getting are driving me to drink.

    I wasn’t aware that you had to be driven to drink, Bing. Subtle suggestions, recommendations, hell, even stern warnings to refrain appear to work in most cases.

    My other blog is on WP through Hosting Matters. It’s somewhat different than MT but I’ve not had any issues with it yet. The spam catcher software (Akismet? I think it’s called) seems to work well so far, but that blog gets few visitors so mebbe that’s why. It has picked up all the spam to date though.
    I’ve managed to post pics without a problem after a little bit of finagling. the only big deal seems to be finding a template you like.
    I have no idea about importing your old posts, but I bet Hosting Matters would be of help there too. Good Luck.

    I have no experience at all with WordPress, but you can fairly easily export all posts from MT into a text file. I assume WP could import them, that’s kind of the idea of exporting, but I may be wrong on that.

    Askimet works great. The biggest limitation with wordpress is embedding video. Apart from youtube, it’s a real hassle embedding anything else. 1.618 and mole have managed to embed wordpress video but it’s a bugger. Any other video, you need to buy a funky program, as far as I know.

    About the importing/exporting thing, Mr B. Make sure you CAN export your content in its entirety first. The only way to do that is to try it. I found exporting just the entries on my blog was time consuming and resource draining. My host system would not allow the task to complete. What I ended up doing is I left the one that was causing me so much grief up as an archive and started a new one. That might be your best option, too.

    Good point, but I *think* it works, Rob. I did it this morning and it plopped a 3.6mb text file on my desktop (which I presume to be filled with mostly THS blatherings) and it gave no indications that something gang aft agley.

    Look at the text file and make sure all of the entries are there. Go all the way to the end of the file and see what date ie on the last entry. I would think your blog is bigger than 3.6mb because mine was.

    My old blog ran from April 2003 to June 2008, mostly one entry per day as you well know. My text file export on that one is 5.8mb. The new version of MT on my new host allows the export to finish. My old host and versions 3.whatever never allowed that task to complete.
