I Guess I Were Too Clingy An Schtupid Tuh See

Obama’s, and the Democrats’, problem this election cycle is that they’ve ruled too much from the Center

Nobody need feel, evidently, that a setback for the Democrats is an unfathomable mystery. My own preferred theories emphasise the economy – which the administration has handled tolerably well in appallingly difficult circumstances – combined with serial political miscalculation. Mr Obama often settled for untidy centrist compromises (on the stimulus, on healthcare), thus disappointing the left; but without ever championing those compromises, causing moderates to wonder where he would stop, given the chance to go further. Offending both segments was an avoidable mistake.

Uh huh.

“Mr Obama often settled for untidy centrist compromises…”

“Offending both segments untidy centrist compromises.”

These statements can’t reconciled with each other, unless one assumes that “centrist” = “that ain’t what Clive Crook wants to see happening”.

And please forgive my spelling and punctuation; it’s early in the morning, and that coffee is still being ingested.

Or, y’know, it could be the 14 trillion in debt, along with the “I won” attitude and the locking out of the opposition.

  6. Yojimbo says:

Hey, he handled the economy “tolerably well”. Get off his back.

If he’s a Centrist I’d hate to see someone who really wants to wreck the place.

But this is par for the course. All the Left has this cycle is the usual bogeymen: Big (take your pick), Wall Street fat cats, the same ol’ class warfare – only leavened this time with “B-B-But… the polls can be wrong!!!1!one!” This guy on MSNBC even cites Dewey vs. Truman for Leftie inspiration. And there’s the weak-sauce scare phrase here: “oh noes, gridlock!”

Let’s not break out the party streamers yet…. but I’m warming up my Vincent Price cackle for the results. Runyan/Little/Siprelle, my friends…

  8. Yojimbo says:

You forgot to nuance “centrist” ‘fly. He meant governing from the center of International A.N.S.W.E.R. Please adjust your settings accordingly.

Plus allowing this nations unemployed to flounder in limbo while spending more time on the links than Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson put together.

Hey, after a hard week of spending the country into bankruptcy a guy ought to be allowed a little unwinding playing golf. I mean he only gets six months of vacation a year (or so it seems). Give the poor guy a break.

If the Dems get us further into hock with the Chinese they had better spend the borrowed money on the Pentagon. If we do an Argentina on them (and that is far more likely than paying the bondholders back) they might just send their army and navy to collect the debt. After all, they will remember that is what the Europeans did to them in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. A
British official ran the Chinese Maritime Customs (the only really reliable source of revenue for the government) and made sure that a large fraction of the revenue went to the foreign bondholders.
