The fraternity and UVA.

Pardon my french but Dear Rolling Stone: Fuck You

Rolling Stone magazine retracted its article about a brutal gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity after the release of a report on Sunday that concluded the widely discredited piece was the result of failures at every stage of the process.

The report, published by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and commissioned by Rolling Stone, said the magazine failed to engage in “basic, even routine journalistic practice” to verify details of the ordeal that the magazine’s source, identified only as Jackie, described to the article’s author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely.

On Sunday, Ms. Erdely, in her first extensive comments since the article was cast into doubt, apologized to Rolling Stone’s readers, her colleagues and “any victims of sexual assault who may feel fearful as a result of my article.”

Something bad may have happened at some point, sometime, somewhere to that young lady, we will never know, but the article is a hoax, a complete lie and fabrication.

Well My Bracket Is Totally Hosed

Does this mean I actually have to talk with my family for the rest of the month?

The Possible Racial Angle Is Disturbing, But…

Also very disturbing are (armed?) and uniformed Alcohol Control Agents

(CNN)”Hey! His head is bleeding! Yo, his head is bleeding!” a bystander screams.

Martese Johnson is lying face-down on the pavement, blood flowing from his forehead. He was injured when Virginia alcohol control agents took him to the ground, trying to arrest him for public intoxication and obstruction of justice.

As he’s pinned, video captures him yelling: “I go to UVA! … You f****** racists! What the f***? How did this happen?”

An agent can be heard telling the student to stop fighting.

The video does not show the moments leading up to the arrest. But many say it’s the latest example of excessive force by officers against a black man.

Denied entry at a bar
The incident started when Johnson, 20, was turned away from a bar during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control agents approached him and decided to “further detain the individual based on their observations and further questioning,” the agency said.

The proper response to a possibly tipsy 20 year old kid trying to get in a bar on St. Pats is to laugh and say “nice try”, not tackle him and handcuff him.

This is what fascism looks like, boys and girls: Official Alcohol Agents beating the shit out of people trying to get a drink.

If You’ve Got 20 Minutes

Peyton Manning At UVa is well worth watching

He is charming, humble, and funny.

I Hope She Wins, And Wins A Lot

And I hope the DA grows a pair and files criminal assault charges against the agents

A University of Virginia student charged last year with assaulting Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agents attempting to stop her for underage possession beer that turned out to be sparkling water has filed a $40 million lawsuit against the state and seven agents.

Among other things, Elizabeth K. Daly’s 47-page suit, filed Tuesday in Richmond Circuit Court, alleges malicious prosecution, failure to train ABC agents appropriately, and six counts of assault and battery.

Michael Kelly, director of communications for Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, said, “It’s incredibly unfortunate that the situation that night in Charlottesville occurred at all. As this case proceeds, the Attorney General’s Office will defend the commonwealth’s interests and work to ensure a just and reasonable outcome.”

Now from that quote you can see the AG sure sounds like he’s looking for a way out of this. And for good reason:

According to the suit, Daly and two friends went to a Harris Teeter store in Daly’s Chevrolet Trailblazer, arriving shortly before 10 p.m. Among other items purchased by one of Daly’s friends was a case of canned LaCroix sparkling water. The women walked into the parking lot, one of them carrying the clearly visible sparkling water.

Seven ABC agents were in the parking lot watching for young-looking individuals and checking their identification to ensure no state laws were bring broken. Two agents followed the three to their car.

Daly got behind the wheel, one friend sat in the front passenger seat and placed the sparkling water on the floor and the other friend got in the back seat. Before starting the car, Daly saw two people approach the car and begin banging on the windows.

The two agents, says the suit, “allegedly displayed their badges hanging from necklaces which at the time and under the circumstances were not clearly visible or readable.”

The agents warned Daly not to turn on the car, but she and a friend were unable to open the windows using buttons because the car was not running. Other agents ran to the car.

The suit alleges that Daly called 911 on her cellphone, which she handed to a friend. The friend told the operator that they could not tell if the agents were real law enforcement officers.

Daly “was shaking and saying, ‘I don’t know what to do!’?” One agent suddenly drew a gun, pointing it toward the ground.

When an agent tried to break a passenger window with a steel flashlight, Daly drove off with some of the agents chasing on foot. She drove out of the parking lot and stopped at a red light intending to drive to a police station.

While at the red light, the 911 operator confirmed to the women that they were real ABC agents, according to the suit.

Police arrived on the scene and drove Daly to the police station, where an ABC agent swore out a criminal complaint that led to Daly’s arrest over assaulting two agents and over failing to stop when ordered.

Daly spent the night in jail and was released the following afternoon. On June 27, the charged were dropped. On Oct. 22, the arrest and court records were expunged.

These sorts of way-over-the-top police incidents for “crimes” so pernicious and perilous, crimes that threaten the very the Survival of the Republic like, well I shudder and blanch to mention, crimes like Under Age Possession and Presumptive Consumption of Carbonated Beverages By Teetotalers, these sorts of things are where the courts and the citizens need to hit back, and hit hard. This type of governmental abuse can not be allowed to stand.

Caprice and arbitrary thuggery are the hallmarks of a police state.

Virginia A #1 Seed?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Oh nononononononononononononono!

Not what I wanted at all.

I DO NOT want us to be the first #1 to lose to a #16…

Yeah, I’m a fatalist.

I’ve Been Waiting A Long Time For This

Virginia wins the ACC

A couple of decades of frustration lifted off the shoulders of Virginia fans on Saturday afternoon. That’s how long it’d been — 33 years — since the Cavaliers had celebrated an outright ACC championship. But as the clocked ticked down to the end of the 12th-ranked Cavaliers’ 75-56 upset of No. 4 Syracuse, Virginia fans could embrace an uncommon truth as they stormed the court at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville: These Wahoos are ACC champs.

Coach Tony Bennett’s crew capped a regular season with an outright crown for the first time since Virginia’s 1980-81 campaign. The Orange, which started the year 25-0 and climbed to the top of college basketball’s rankings, came up short for the ACC regular-season crown in their first season in the conference, losing for the third time in four games. Virginia’s top-ranked defense did its job against Syracuse’s attack down the stretch while the Cavaliers capitalized on a dominating rebounding performance on both ends.

Please oh pleasepleaseplease don’t get booted the first weekend in the NCAAs!

Yes, There Is No Pope At The Moment

But there was a CLEAR sign given last night that we still are blessed by the Divine.

Coincidence?

I don’t think so.

Wa-Hoo-What?

Yet another face palm at Virginia

Justin Higgins at JHPolitics has obtained a rather awkward email detailing a meeting of the University of Virginia’s College Democrats chapter. In the email, we reportedly had a woman named Carmen who went nuts, a bad turnout at their phone bank, and a bad turnout canvasing. As Higgins noted, their plan to remedy their unenthused cohorts is to conscript “hotties” from their respective sororities. The first lesson of E-Mail 101 is to be mindful of who is on the recipient list.

Mind you this is the Democrats so there is of course nothing sexist about referring to “hotties;” in fact I’m sure they consider such terminology to be empowering.

Finally Some Good UVA News

This year has been an embarrassing mess in C-Ville with the whole kerfuffle involving Fauxahantas’ buddy Theresa Sullivan.

Finally some news that makes this Wahoo not hang his head in shame

A University of Virginia spokeswoman says President Barack Obama will not be at the university when he comes to Charlottesville on Wednesday. In a statement released Friday, it was confirmed that the university declined the president’s request to speak at UVA.

UVA says the Obama campaign requested the use of one of two outdoor venues – the Amphitheater or the Harrison-Small Library plaza. The university declined the request for a number of reasons including class cancellations, which UVA estimates could be more than 186 classes on the second day of school. The other main reason is they would have to take on the full cost of security, and because of university policy and their federal and state tax exempt status, they would have to offer the same opportunity to the other candidate so as not to show favor for either candidate.

As is his MO (no, not her, the traditional meaning. Though come to think of it…) he wanted to invite himself over and allow you to briefly gaze upon his grandeur and through his munificent benevolence graciously let you pick up the entire tab.

What a guy.

And WAHOOWA!

What Is He Smoking?

Stewart, Stewart…picking my Cavs as his “Upset Winners”???

Maryland (6-3) at Virginia (4-5)
UPSET SPECIAL: It was fun while it lasted for the Terrapins, who started 6-2 and came within 37 seconds of winning at Miami last weekend. But Maryland, with its 101st-ranked offense, has little margin for error. Virginia, which posted a breakthrough win against Miami two weeks ago and put up 48 points on Duke last week in defeat, is well suited to winning a low-scoring contest.

Read the first half of that last line again: Virginia scored 48 points last week…and still lost.

How Sad And Terrible

I feel so sorry for this lovely young lady and her family

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A senior on the Virginia men’s lacrosse team was charged Monday with the slaying of a fellow student on the women’s team, stunning students at the picturesque campus.

George Huguely, 22, of Chevy Chase, Md., was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, also a senior, of Cockeysville, Md., Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said.

It’s tragic, shocking and stunning; I just can’t imagine such a thing happening at Virgina. Oh sure, people get drunk and fall out of buildings or crash things and find ways to die, but murder? Yeek.

I have to add there’s one sort of throw-away paragraph in the article that really ticks me off though and shows the shallow depth of CNN’s “journalism” and “integrity”

By coincidence, Huguely attended the same prep school as some of the Duke lacrosse players who were accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a team party. The charges later were dismissed.

If by “the charges were later dismissed” CNN means “the dancer made the shit up and the players were lynched by the media, the Durham prosecutor (who went to jail and was disbarred for his behavior in this case), Duke faculty and Duke University (which has paid out probably millions to the players in “settlements”) then I agree with them.

But somehow I don’t think that’s the impression they wanted to convey by that.

Virginia Won A Game?

How the heck did that happen?

Be Still My Beating Heart!

Virginia beat a ranked opponent!

Wahoowa!

The Pain Is Still Too Fresh

To my dying day I will remember the teaser from Frank Reynolds on ABC’s World News Tonight before a commercial break: David 77, Goliath 72.
And there was no Christmas joy for me that year.
Thank you, Sports Illustrated, for twisting the knife in yet again.

UNC Chapel Hill

Where women are men and men are nervous

Women Charged With Sexually Assaulting UNC Football Players
Hillsborough — Three UNC football players were the victims in a kidnapping, robbery and sexual assault incident involving two women, the university confirmed Thursday afternoon.
Chapel Hill police said the assault happened about 3:30 a.m. Sunday at an apartment complex where all three victims were bound with tape and then assaulted by the suspects.
At a bond hearing Thursday, Orange County Assistant District Attorney Morgan Whitney said police arrived at the scene and found two of the victims, tied up, in boxer shorts. The third victim was fully clothed with his hands tied.
At least two were sexually assaulted, Whitney said. He is still waiting on the final police report to see if the third man was also. None of the victims required medical attention.

I mean, I know the Chapel Hill crowd is always trying to one-up the Dukies, but this is a little ridiculous even by ACC standards.

“Anybody Moves, The Nigger Gets It”

Should we not allow Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor to run for public office?
The MSM has been all a-twitter about what George Allen did or did not say whilst at the University of Virginia in the 70s, and the blogs have been following this frankly ridiculous story.
Yes, ridiculous. It disgusts me to no end how all these people are primping and parading around saying “Ooh golly, I never said that word with these sainted lips!”. Oh bullshit. I was born in 1964, and everyone said it at some point. To our society’s great credit as the 60s became the 70s became the 80s people gained awareness of such casual racism and people who used it were mostly quietly shunned, and those who used it and meant it in its full derogatory nature more and more likely to be openly and publically shunned and dressed down. That’s called progress, folks, and it’s a good thing. Social change does not happen overnight, and frankly the change that I’ve seen in my lifetime over how minorities are treated by people in everyday life in our country is one of the things I’m proudest of as an American.
And I include myself in that change, as I certainly used all types of racial epithets growing up, as did everyone of my peers, in everyday normal conversation (to set the record straight, I’ve also jaywalked, smoked pot and run several red lights). But then the strangest thing happened: I grew up, as did my society. What was ok to casually say in 1972 was bound to cause some embarrassed looks by 1982 and would certainly cause problems by 1990 because people had learned that it was false in their hearts, regardless of its status legally; this change in social mores is far more important than any law could ever be.
I attended the University of Virginia in the early 80s, roughly a decade behind the folks embroiled above, and I certainly heard the word used by both blacks and whites, but I have to say that even by then most times the context was more Blazing Saddles than David Duke.

It’s only a word, folks. A hateful word. A word that reminds us of the worst in ourselves and our country’s past. Perhaps it should remind us of how far we’ve come from that shameful past.
Oh, I’m certainly not saying we should just casually toss it about (although any quick listen to the music blasting from many cars these days would lead one to assume that that is indeed the case), but for its useage thirty some-odd years ago to become a major issue in a political campaign without any indication of its relevance to Allen’s current views seems rather assinine, at the very least. And for his attackers to piously claim never to have uttered it is beyond belief.

Millions Spent

Same result.
It is disgusting how Virginia has bought into this “big football program” mentality.
UVa could field 6-5 teams before they wasted all this money; think how much better the academic facilities could be with those resources.

So Hoos Gonna Be Virginia’s Next Coach?

Man, we stink. I mean, we’ve always sucked wind at football, but I could always count on the basketball team to get us through the winter.
But now?
Blech.
