Visible wealth makes economic inequality worse, experiments show

The economic gap between the rich and poor becomes even wider when the inequality is made visible, a new Yale University study says.

Researchers from the Yale Institute for Network Science (YINS) found that when people didn’t know their neighbors’ financial status, they cooperated and interacted much better with each other. But when people were able to see a significant gap in wealth between themselves and their neighbors, the social fabric began to unravel — and the gap in wealth became wider than when the economic inequality was invisible.

Senators press rail nominee on experience, automated trains

Senators pressed President Obama’s choice to run the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on Thursday on her lack of prior experience in the industry and her insistence on enforcing a December deadline for automating trains.

In the spring, Obama tapped Sarah Feinberg, who has been leading the FRA since January, for a full-time term atop the rail agency, which requires Senate confirmation.

Prior to assuming the role of FRA chief, Feinberg served as Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx’s chief of staff, making her a non-traditional choice to oversee the nation’s railroad industry at a time when multiple passenger and freight-train accidents have raised questions about safety.

…Feinberg took over the FRA after the retirement of Joseph Szabo, a career railroader who resigned from the agency in 2014. Prior to assuming the role of FRA chief, Feinberg served in roles at the White House and Facebook.

Migrant talks in Prague amid EU quota dispute

BERLIN — Central European foreign ministers in Prague on Friday rejected a compulsory resettlement plan for refugees proposed by the European Union.

The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary said the proposal unveiled by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday would not solve the problem of thousands of people attempting to relocate to Europe.

“The first and most important task is to gain control over the outer border of the European Union,”Peter Szijjarto, Hungary’s Foreign Minister, said.

The EU’s idea is to redistribute 160,000 refugees — the majority of them Syrians — among 22 of the EU’s 28 member states.

…Milos Zeman, president of the Czech Republic, says his country will take 1,500 refugees, but he has also cautioned that asylum-seekers may bring terrorism and infectious diseases.

He told the Czech tabloid Blesk that refugees should be told three things when they arrive in the country.

“The first one: Nobody invited you. The second one: When you’re already here, you have to respect our rules as we respect your rules when we arrive in your country. The third one: if you don’t like it, get out of here.“

Migrants in the Balkans: Everyone wants to be Syrian

HAJDUKOVO, Serbia (AP) — A Pakistani identity card in the bushes, a Bangladeshi one in a cornfield. A torn Iraqi driver’s license bearing the photo of a man with a Saddam-style mustache, another one with a scarfed woman displaying a shy smile.

Documents scattered only meters from Serbia’s border with Hungary provide evidence that many of the migrants flooding Europe to escape war or poverty are scrapping their true nationalities and likely assuming new ones, just as they enter the European Union.

Many of those travelers believe that using a fake document — or having none at all — gives them a better of chance of receiving asylum in Germany and other western European states. That’s because the surest route to asylum is to be a refugee from war and not an economic migrant fleeing poverty. That fact has led to a huge influx of people claiming to be Syrian.

Serbian border police say that 90 percent of those arriving from Macedonia, some 3,000 a day, claim they are Syrian, although they have no documents to prove it. The so-called Balkan corridor for the migrant flight starts in Turkey, then goes through Macedonia and Serbia before entering the European Union in Hungary.

“You can see that something is fishy when most of those who cross into Serbia enter January first as the date of their birth,” said border police officer Miroslav Jovic. “Guess that’s the first date that comes to their mind.”

The chief of the European Union border agency Frontex said that trafficking in fake Syrian passports has increased.

“A lot of people enter Turkey with fake Syrian papers, because they know that they’ll get asylum in the EU more easily,” Fabrice Leggeri said.

Denmark’s not at all happy with how Merkel’s invitation is working out

Danish train operator DSB on Wednesday cancelled all rail services to and from Germany as hundreds of migrants refused to leave at least two trains at a busy ferry crossing between the two countries.

“It’s the police who have asked us to do this,” a DSB spokesman told AFP, as several hundred other refugees marched on a motorway hoping to get to Sweden, which has more generous asylum rules than Denmark.

At least two trains carrying around 200 refugees were being held in Rødby, Scandinavia’s busiest ferry crossing to Germany.

The refugees refused to register with Danish authorities, which would mean having to apply for asylum in Denmark or returning to Germany, whereas they want to seek asylum in Sweden.

Some people had tried running from the trains but most of them were detained by police and sent to a refugee centre.

This is not going to end well for Europe.

The FBI was first alerted that the IG was conducting a “criminal investigation” of Ms. Abedin in a memo dated Oct. 22, 2013, the records show.

After 15 months of extensive document-gathering and interviews, the IG submitted the case for review by the Justice Department public integrity division, which declined to prosecute Ms. Abedin. The “alleged violations” cited were improperly requesting and approving annual leave and “embezzlement,” the documents state.

“The case was not declined based on the merits of the investigation,” stated the final investigative report, dated Jan. 26.

Such a designation usually means federal prosecutors decided not to pursue a case, but only because they didn’t think it worth the resources, not because the facts and evidence couldn’t support a case.
