ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Pakistan could pull back troops fighting Islamist militants near the Afghan border if the United States cuts off aid, the defense minister said on Tuesday in an interview with Pakistani media.
The United States Monday said it would hold back $800 million — a third of nearly $2 billion in security aid to Pakistan — in a show of displeasure over Pakistan’s removal of U.S. military trainers, limits on visas for U.S. personnel and other bilateral irritants.

Screw the Pakistanis. Why are we giving monetary “aid” to country that can afford to develop and maintain nuclear weapons? They play us like a fiddle.
I am in favor of cutting off money to “friends” and “partners” who stab the U.S. in the back. It’s only going to get uglier – Wali Karzai’s murder this morning shows insurgents know foreign troops are heading for the exits and insurgents of all kinds will start assassinating people they think threaten their ascension into the coming power vacuum. American men and women should no longer be asked to suffer fighting a war that is not winnable. Bring them all home, safe and sound, and let them work at rebuilding our own country to benefit their own futures.
These “professionals” always make me want to thank the Founders for the Second Amendment.
Sometimes you use a carrot. Sometimes you use a stick. It’s about time we change to the stick.
Ave, this war certainly is winnable. If we were serious about it, we would win handily. We need to get rid of the drones, the planes, the himars, the high technology nonsense. We don’t need any of that. All we need are men with rifles, but a lot of them. Everywhere we go, the enemy flees, not from our technology, but from our presence. That’s all that it’s about. They are not the Soviets. They are a backwards, mostly illiterate, tribal society. All they need is security and that comes from presence. Peace breaks out and they start observing the rule of law. Works every time.
Agreed Skyler, all the whizbang stuff is neat but if you want to win, it takes boots on the ground.
People talk about the war being unwinnable and they point to history, but this only shows that they have a shallow study of history.
The British had trouble in the 1840’s or so when they went to Kabul and left an incompetent in charge and they were massacred. People citing this event fail to notice that the British went back and stayed for decades after that, and left on their own terms.
They point to the Soviets, but they fail to point out that the Soviets were brutal rapists and murderers using poorly trained and motivated conscripts facing an insurgency largely trained and equipped by us.
True story: Back in 2003, a friend of mine who was a photojournalist (now a producer for 60 Minutes) told me that a local leader asked a US commander if all American soldiers were homosexual because none of them were raping their women.
That’s one of the differences between an army that can’t win a counter insurgency and one that can.
Ave and Skyler are both correct. The current war is not winnable because we do not have the will to win it.
If Pakistan does pull its troops back from the border it’ll make it easier to take out the Talibannies. Win-win.
I do heartily agree and think our men and women could certainly win and create a good society there, were we willing to bear the cost to clear, hold and build for the next thirty years. It seems the Afghan people haven’t really ever lived in peace so it would probably take that long to learn – a generation, say. And please stay safe, Skyler!
P.S. Our young man is heading over there about now. I admire him and all our soldiers and I hope their missions will be successful and they will come safely back home. In the meantime I worry and pray a lot.

No, it will take thirty years at our current pace, but with a lot more people, it would be over quite in short order.

Now. That 900-page rules of engagement manual practically forces our troops to get permission to tap the cretins who are firing at them. Tear up the book and the Taliban has a month, tops.
