Chinese Fighter Jets ‘Repel’ US Spy Aircraft
Two Chinese fighter jets crossed an unofficial dividing line in the Taiwan Strait late last month in pursuit of a U.S. spy aircraft, according to defense sources in Taipei and Beijing.
The incident marked the first time in more than a decade that Chinese military aircraft have entered Taiwan’s side of the 180km-wide strait. According to Taiwan’s defense ministry, two Chinese Su-27 fighter jets briefly crossed the so-called “middle line” on June 29.
Confirmation of the close encounter comes as the U.S. and China are trying to cool tensions in the South China Sea and safeguard a recent improvement in bilateral military relations.
Taipei, whose relations with Beijing have also been on the mend, moved to downplay the incident. “This was not between Taiwan and China, but between China and the U.S.,” said a senior Taiwanese defense official. “The Chinese crossed the line to repel a perceived intrusion by a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft.”
China and Taiwan have long respected the middle line, which was drawn by the U.S. when it signed a mutual defense treaty with the island in 1954.
The “first time in more than a decade” is not a “whoopsie, my bad”.
They’re going to be doing this in quarters we never imagined, especially now that Obama’s mad Libyan gamble’s gone so terribly awry.

The world is ruled by the aggressive use of force. Perceived weakness matters,especially when you are the underwriter for global security.
All we have to do is look back to the Carter era. Russians running all over our hemisphere with landing strips for backfire bombers, combat brigades in Cuba. Then we had the testing of rapid reload missiles in Europe and all those one man subs running aground in Scandanavia, they were surveying for an invasion of Europe. And this guy make Carter look like Patton.
As I’ve said before(no, really I have) this guy is going to force a future president to commit our forces in a horrible future war, and that is if we can hold him to just one term. Two terms and all may be lost.
And that doesn’t count a possible, if not probable, nuclear exchange in the Middle East.
The world sees the U.S.A. can’t even manage a budget. We should expect more testing from the aggressors of the world to see what else we can’t manage.
I’m sure the world is already painfully aware of the shortcomings of this wimp.
And “licking their chops” is the problem…
I suppose it was a U-2 spy plane, don’t think SU-27s can get to that altitude. Maybe though. Too bad they retired the SR-71.
John Derbyshire wrote something for National Review back in 2002 that rings very true today:
Taiwan will be re-united with the Motherland….by some combination of economic carrot and military stick. The U.S. will grumble ineffectually, up to the point where the Chinese ambassador loses his patience and asks the U.S. Secretary of State point-blank: “How many cities are you willing to lose over this? We ourselves are willing to lose three or four.” Then we will stop grumbling
