Orange County Is Home To Simpler Folks, I Guess

Of course, Option B is that the school officials are complete morons.
Blind morons, at that. That’s as charitable as I can be after reading this:

A veteran teacher used the font — depicting quasi-anatomically correct male and female stick figures contorting into letters of the alphabet — on the cover sheet of a spelling curriculum given to parents at a Pine Tree Elementary open house last week.
Think Kama Sutra meets Sesame Street.
But at first glance, it’s difficult to make out the salaciousness of the type font.
Sources said the teacher had no idea the alphabet was offensive when she downloaded the font from the Internet. It’s unclear if any disciplinary action has been or will be taken against the teacher, who sources said has been with the district for many years.
“I definitely believe it was a mistake,” said Kelly Stegmann, Pine Tree Parent Teacher Association president. Stegmann said she received very few calls from parents about it.
The design is so subtle that even school officials missed it. And many parents didn’t know what they were looking at until they received a letter of apology Friday from Pine Tree principal Jean Maxson.
“This packet was reviewed by a number of people, including myself,” Maxson wrote. “I take full responsibility for this inappropriate publication.”

Now, here is the cover page, the one that is so innocent at first glance. I’m sorry, even reduced to this size it, ahem, catches the eye shall we say:

Are you telling me that all these people saw this in its full 8 1/2″ by 11″ glory and didn’t notice?

I keep telling you the Ed schools hire the worst of the worst.

  2. Mr. Bingley says:

The assertion that ‘she didn’t know’ simply beggars belief. I am looking for this font, because I’m sure it will be quite obvious from its name what it is.
But I’m a little timid to actively search for it from work…

I don’t know which is worse, the teacher insisting she didn’t realize using the font was a mistake, or thinking that people are stupid enough to buy such a lame excuse.
In either case, all this sounds like posturing to give the teacher a slap on the wrist for her idiocy, when she deserves a suspension, if not an outright firing. Gotta love the NEA.

  4. Mr. Bingley says:

Don’t forget the admins all said they looked at it too and saw ‘nothing wrong.’
    Jeez louise.

  5. WOOF! Now THAT’S limber…

I’ve looked at the larger version and, at first thought, one might fairly argue that there’s no way that anybody that isn’t a completely clueless moron could not see that font for exactly what it was, starting with the charming threesome that composes the letter “A.”
However, after having been in several classes with people majoring in elementary school education (with my sincerest apologies to those in that profession that are committed and very good at what they do), they were hands down some of the dumbest flipping people I have ever encountered. In one class I had with a bunch of them – a senior level geography course – after a test that had a map interpretation question, the teacher had to actually make the announcement “ladies and gentlemen, South America is not a COUNTRY.”
These are the people teaching your children right now.

  7. Kiliman says:

I have a hard time believing this was accidental. The teacher admitted downloading the font from the Internet.
The font’s name is “Group Sex”. So I don’t see how the teacher could have mistaken the font for something innocent.

  8. Mr. Bingley says:

Kili, welcome and thank you! I’ve been trying to find that font because I was sure the name had to be something like that.

  9. Emily says:

Guys, think about it. This isn’t something this teacher showed to Junior in some special secret meeting. It was a cover letter distributed to parents. If the teacher had any idea what they were distributing, they must have desperately wanted to lose their job and go down in perv history. Sure, the font is called “Group Sex” and three quarters of the figures are giving each other blow jobs, but like I said, I’ve known a lot of these people and they just plain really are that friggin’ stupid. I’d be more angry that people that dumb are in charge of educating your kids than the font itself.

Ah, shucks, Em; I suppose you’re right. I have known many administrators who, while well-intentioned, were complete epsilon semi-morons.
And a lot of them have exceedingly poor eyesight.

  11. The_Real_JeffS says:

Emily, you are spot on, which is why I’d like to see this idiot thrown out of any teaching job. Alas, that’s unlikely to happen. She’s in California, and likely an ardent member of the NEA.

Apologies for the double post…..feel free to delete one!

hmm, MT is on the fritz…

Naw, Sis likes to keep the comment count high!

  17. (BINGLEY, you are a lying BASTARD !!!)

Wow, Miss Em. That’s some posse you hang with…

  18. Nightfly says:

Someone had to pose for all the letters, right?

  19. Mr. Bingley says:

Careful ‘Fly; she’s very adept with a rusty razor.

  20. Mr. Bingley says:

You know, Emily, the more I think about it and, ahem, look at that font I wonder if the teacher thought that those figures were the ones from Antz

P.J. O’rourke said in POW that Bill Bennett always looked as if he were about to say: “anyone who doesn’t know what’s wrong with American education never screwed an El Ed major in college”. That’s been true since about 1975.
