‘Hundreds” And Rising
1:20 P.M. – (AP) Mayor Ray Nagin says at least hundreds of people are dead — maybe thousands — in New Orleans. “We know there is a significant number of dead bodies in the water,” and others dead in attics, Mayor Ray Nagin said. Asked how many, he said: “Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands.”
2:20 P.M. – From Weezie Porter: WWL-TV Sales account executive. I evacuated with my family to Nashville. The people we are staying with have a relative in the Chateau Living Center in Kenner 716 Village Road. Their phone is working from time to time 504-464=0604. They report that all of the nurses have left, Only a few aides left there that have been working since Friday. They were supposed to be evacuated by bus but they did not show up. No medications have been given since Sunday,. 4 patients have died.

I know that NOLA is getting the lion’s share of the media attention right now, but I went over to sunherald.com and looked at the pictures of Biloxi, and oh. my. god. There are barges, casino BARGES!, thrown WHOLE like Matchbox cars onto the beach. And the I-90 bridge — gone. Not damaged — GONE.
The mind boggles.
Both bridges into Biloxi and out the other side (Pass Christian) are gone, Lisa. And the casinos crushed those beautiful waterfront Victorians as they surged ashore. If they didn’t, the multi-ton rolls of papar stored on them did.
With the people still in them, because so many felt ‘if this house made it through Camille, it can get through this’. I think Camille caused more loss of life through a false sense of security in the surroundings having survived it, than it saved by being the deadly example of choice.
I’m sure the whole ‘can’t have a casino unless it’s on a barge’ rule was a compromise between the very real economic needs of the state and it’s conservative Christian roots, but it’s looking like a wholesale vehicle of slaughter and one of the stupidest decisions ever made right now.

Again, it’s so hard not to be over emotional about all this. NOLA is hard enough, but I lived in Biloxi/Gulfport for eight years. This is hard.
My oldest daughter (6 yrs.) was so worried about her gradfather on Monday. Her teacher actually called home to tell us. After we found out he was okay, we showed her some pictures of the area. She was blown away.
I have no idea when I’ll ever be able to go back. Furthermore, I have no idea when we’ll ever be able to enjoy ourselves there again. Mary Mahoney’s … man, I have so many memories there.
Some of those pictures make me wonder how ANYONE lived through this. You know, what with WHOLE CASINOS on top of their houses and all.
