How Sad And Terrible

I feel so sorry for this lovely young lady and her family

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A senior on the Virginia men’s lacrosse team was charged Monday with the slaying of a fellow student on the women’s team, stunning students at the picturesque campus.

George Huguely, 22, of Chevy Chase, Md., was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, also a senior, of Cockeysville, Md., Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said.

It’s tragic, shocking and stunning; I just can’t imagine such a thing happening at Virgina. Oh sure, people get drunk and fall out of buildings or crash things and find ways to die, but murder? Yeek.

I have to add there’s one sort of throw-away paragraph in the article that really ticks me off though and shows the shallow depth of CNN’s “journalism” and “integrity”

By coincidence, Huguely attended the same prep school as some of the Duke lacrosse players who were accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a team party. The charges later were dismissed.

If by “the charges were later dismissed” CNN means “the dancer made the shit up and the players were lynched by the media, the Durham prosecutor (who went to jail and was disbarred for his behavior in this case), Duke faculty and Duke University (which has paid out probably millions to the players in “settlements”) then I agree with them.

But somehow I don’t think that’s the impression they wanted to convey by that.

Presbyterian Missionary Detained

Well shazam! They arrested Shazad

The FBI has arrested a 30-year old Bridgeport, Connecticut man in connection with the failed attempt to set off a car bomb in New York’s Times Square, federal authorities told ABCNews.com late Monday night.

The man was identified as Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized American citizen, who had recently returned from a five month trip to Pakistan and the city of Peshawar, a known jumping off points for al Qaeda and Taliban recruits.

Shahzad was arrested at Kennedy airport in New York City where FBI agents said he was attempting to leave the country to go to Dubai.

At a press conference early Monday morning, Attorney General Eric Holder said “it’s clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans.” He urged American to “remain vigilant.”

I’m shocked, shocked I tell you that his name is not Tea Party Q. Smith!

I heard a clip of Holder’s news conference where he made great pains to say Shazad was “an American Citizen.” I really really despise weasel crap like that. Yes, he is “technically” an American citizen…but frankly, as he’s also a foreign-born scumbag who just tried to kill thousands of us I don’t think it’s apt to make an illusion that he is “just like one of us.”

Hell, I’d Riot Too

…if they tried to make me work past 53

Announcing the deal yesterday, prime minister George Papandreou told his people to prepare for ‘great sacrifices’ after violent clashes between police and protesters opposing the cuts at the weekend.

He unveiled austerity measures and tax rises worth 30billion euros (£26billion) including:

* ˜An increase in the retirement age from an average age of 53 to 67;
* ˜Government workers to lose annual bonuses worth an extra two months’ pay;
* ˜Ten per cent tax rise on alcohol, cigarettes and petrol;
* ˜Three-year wage freeze in the public sector;
* ˜Early retirement will be limited or abolished altogether;
* ˜VAT increase from 21 per cent to 23 per cent.

Things may get a bit nastier over there…

Those Poor folks In Tennessee

Gosh, 9-10 inches or more of rain in just a day or so.

The western two-thirds of Tennessee has seen between 6 and 20 inches of rain since Saturday, with flooding spreading to Kentucky.

That’s just insane.

Lots of pictures here, and things may get worse tonight

According to The Tennessean, eight or nine more feet of floodwater is expected overnight.

Keep them in your prayers, and sending a few shekels to the Red Cross is probably not a bad idea.
ths sends: My forever and ALWAYS disaster relief choice is the Salvation Army.

The best way to help during a disaster is often to make a financial contribution to the charity of your choice. Cash donations allow disaster responders to immediately meet the specific needs of disaster survivors without incurring many of the costs associated with sorting, packing, transporting and distributing donated goods. Salvation Army disaster services are funded entirely by donors, and The Salvation Army uses 100% of all disaster donations in support of disaster relief operations.

You can designate where you want your emergency funds spent. I just adore them.

Destruction

NEW YORK (CBS) ?
Police found an “amateurish” but potentially powerful bomb that apparently began to detonate but did not explode in a smoking sport utility vehicle in Times Square, authorities said Sunday.

Thousands of tourists were cleared from the streets for 10 hours after a T-shirt vendor alerted police to the suspicious vehicle, which contained three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

The bomb appeared to be starting to detonate but malfunctioned, top police spokesman Paul Browne told The New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Huzzah for that shirt vendor. With how gorgeous the weather was yesterday there were many many thousands of people there in addition to the folks going to Broadway shows.

OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP

Tomorrow.

I’d like to encourage EVERYone and ANYone who’s one of our local lurkers to try to make it out to one of our beauteous beaches and join the pre-spill cleanup:

An “Operation Clean Sweep” will be held on the beaches to clean them of any debris before the oil spill reaches the shores to prevent additional contamination. This is a preventative measure that everyone can participate in. On Pensacola Beach, the cleanup will be at noon Sunday. Meet at the Gulfside Pavilion at Casino Beach. On Perdido Key Beach, the cleanup will also be at noon Sunday. Meet at the Perdido Key Chamber. Anyone may participate in this pre-cleanup event; please bring your own garbage bags and gloves.

So I See the Burp on Cox for the New “Cooking Channel”

SANITY RETURNS!!!!!

Ah….no.

If you think that food-oriented television couldn’t get any worse or lowbrow than Sandra Lee’s infamous Kwanzaa cake or the frosted tips of Guy Fieri traveling the nation in search of burgers, burgers and more mediocre burgers, you’re in for a shock: There is much worse programming on the menu.

Replacing the Fine Living network on May 31 will be The Cooking Channel, a spinoff from the Food Network, which is almost singlehandedly responsible for the dumbing down of cooking shows and the introduction of the abhorrent concept of “celebrity chefs.”

The network executives promise that The Cooking Channel will be both “low-key” and “hipper,” but in the same breath touts shows that feature the likes of Mo Rocca and food blogger Lisa Lillien, whose philosophy towards food is so staggeringly unhealthy it makes Paula Deen look like Alice Waters.
