“A Christmas Story” Director Killed

This is a real tragedy

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) — Film director Bob Clark, best known for the holiday classic “A Christmas Story,” was killed with his son Wednesday in a head-on crash with a vehicle that a drunken driver steered into the wrong lane, police and the filmmaker’s assistant said.
Clark, 67, and son Ariel Hanrath-Clark, 22, were killed in the accident in Pacific Palisades, said Lyne Leavy, Clark’s personal assistant.
The two men were in an Infiniti that collided head-on with a GMC Yukon around 2:30 a.m. PDT, said Lt. Paul Vernon, a police spokesman.
The driver of the other vehicle, Hector Velazquez-Nava, 24, of Los Angeles and his passenger, described as a 29-year-old woman, were taken to UCLA Medical Center with minor injuries.
Velazquez-Nava was arrested Wednesday afternoon and booked for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol and gross vehicular manslaughter. He was being held on $100,000 bail.
“The initial investigation has concluded that Nava was driving without a license northbound in the southbound lanes while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage,” Vernon said.

I love that movie, and this is a horrible and senseless way to die.
Now, why is it that when I see the name “Hector Velazquez-Nava” combined with “Los Angeles” and “driving without a license” I think “illegal immigrant” oops I mean “undocumented worker” (sorry).
I guess I’m a bad person.

I thought the exact same thing.

  2. “I guess I’m a bad person.”
What does that have to do with the rest of the post?
Coincidentally, just yesterday or the day before, I read a news story about how common DWI is among illegals but I don’t recall where the story was. The thing that irritated me was that it painted it as almost a cultural thing.

America has spent untold billions of dollars in it’s attempt to reduce or eliminate drunk driving. I’d suggest very few illegal aliens come from countries where this is true. And I’d also suggest that many illegal aliens come from countries where driving drunk isn’t uncommon. A prime example is Russia. A friend of mine went there shortly after the Berlin Wall fell and told me stories that astonished me about the amount of drinking that went on.
Couple this with the ridiculous legal attitude here in the US that treats illegal aliens with kid gloves and you’ve got rampant DWI. IMHO I’m positive that this drunk driver probably was caught many times previously by the police who quietly let him go because they didn’t want the paperwork, hassle and expense of dealing with him.
Here in NJ I’ve spent a few nights in traffic court, often through forgetfulness not recklessness, and universally the illegal aliens are easily discerned and receive vastly better treatment than any citizen. You can tell they’re illegals because they A. cannot speak English and require translators and B. have a license from North Carolina. In fact it’s become a running joke here in NJ that North Carolina plates = illegal alien.
Add to the heady brew above the fact that quite a few illegal aliens can’t drive a car to save their, or my, butt.

  4. Ah be a sumbitch. Just after posting that comment, I ran to the lab to do a coupla things, came back and clicked over to CTG’s place and found that story.

  5. Erika says:

Wow, that post and the comments are really racist.

  6. Tom says:

An illegal alien in a 2007 Yukon?
There has to be something else to that story…

  7. Mr. Bingley says:

Label it whatever makes you feel good, Erika, but can you say it’s an unreasonable supposition?
You raise a good point, Tom; we’ll have to see what comes out as the day progresses.

  8. The_Real_JeffS says:

Label it whatever makes you feel good, Erika
And that’s probably the best description of her reaction, Mr. Bingley: “whatever makes her feel good”.

  9. memomachine says:

    Hmmm.
*shrug* it has nothing to do with racism whatsoever. It’s simply the way it is.
It’s exactly the same as stating that drunk driving would be a lot more common if society and the police didn’t work so hard to reduce it. The difference is that many of the societies that illegal aliens come from either don’t care, don’t have the resources or don’t think it’s all that bad to have an over the legal limit blood-alcohol level.
As for the North Carolina plates = illegal. *shrug* that’s the way it is too. Because NJ has implemented the Real ID Act many illegal alien drivers have turned to North Carolina and it’s extremely lax standards as a means of obtaining a drivers license.
