It was a mistake in that the NYT and MoveOn are too stupid to actually understand the impact of such an ad. But I’m sure they don’t see it that way.
Well it sure as hell didn’t help running the ad BEFORE General Petraeus spoke.
Perhaps their attitude going into the thing was “no one will care anyway that we’re bending the rules because we think we are right and we think everyone else thinks just like us.” Or even, that people would cheer them for “speaking truth to power” or whatever the damn cliche is.
Now, of course, they realize that many (most?) Americans don’t “go” for cheating, especially when it’s done to slander a man in uniform.
