Biggest Monthly Deficit Evuh

Ooh, Obama you fiscal hawk you

The federal government posted its largest monthly deficit in history in February at $223 billion, according to preliminary numbers the Congressional Budget Office released Monday morning.

That figure tops last February’s record of $220.9 billion, and marks the 29th straight month the government has run in the red — a modern record. The last time the federal government posted even a monthly surplus was September 2008, just before the financial collapse.

We are so boned.

Remember the good old days, when this was the YEARLY total, and the media complained about it?

  2. ArmedGeek says:

How sad is it that no one is even surprised ?

  3. Dave E. says:

Not only complained, we were bankrupting our children over $100 billion per year spent on Iraq and it was a moral stain on us all. It’s almost like it was really all just partisan politics.

Why are we boned? Well, at the base level……

A buddy of mine had a conversation at work (at a Federal agency), which went something like this:

“Hey, this agreement with the state of [censored] needs updating! Think you can fund it?”

“Wait. What’s wrong with the agreement? It’s old, but it’s simple, and the laws behind haven’t changed very much since it was first written.”

“Well, nothing, but it is old! And I have a new person, freshly hired, who can work on it!”

“A new hire? Isn’t that one of the new hires that we’re having trouble paying for? Because we hired too many people?”

“Well, yes, but it’s a really important agreement, and it needs updating. ”

“Oh? Who wrote it in the first place?”

    “I did, back in 1985.”

“And you’ve never seen reason to update the agreement until now, when you’re short on funding, but plus on people? And you come me because I have the biggest project in the state?”

    “Well, yes.”

“I need to tell you, I don’t have a big budget to begin with. And I have a lot of work to do on the project. So if this agreement is still usable, I can’t agree to funding any updating. You’ll just have to find another way to pay for your extra people.”

    Repeat, ad nauseum.

  5. Yojimbo says:

The last Bush, with a Republican Congress, budget was a $161 billion shortfall for the entire year. These people are going to exceed that level about every month of the fiscal year. And the dems can’t find more than $6 billion in cuts! I shudder to think what would have happened it we hadn’t retaken the House.

    Obama has been an abomination,
    and I voted for him.
I actually think Hillary would have made a better President. But,that’s Monday morning quaterbacking.

  7. Mr. Bingley says:

I think you’re right, greg. And I have to say that I’m sorry that those of us who predicted that a completely inexperienced Obama would be a disaster were right: as much as I like being proven correct, I love my country and want it to be strong and healthy even more.

  8. Mr. Bingley says:

Yojimbo, I think the deficit for the entire year of 2007 was around $220 billion.

Words fail at this level of wanton, reckless, delusional spending.

Oh, and countries fail at it too.

  9. tree hugging sister says:

    Oh, OKAY, greg

    Now we know.

    Oh.

    Yeah.

Thanks for that, by the way. 😉
