Happy Birthday Mr. Jefferson

“I am for a government rigorously frugal and simple. Were we directed from Washington when to sow, when to reap, we should soon want bread.”

“I would rather be exposed to the inconveniencies attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.”

“Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem: I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.”

“The wise know their weakness too well to assume infallibility; and he who knows most, knows best how little he knows.”

Sleep well, Dear Sir.

He also said, “It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.”

  2. Gary from Jersey says:

These quotes are why kids aren’t taught Jeffersonian principles anymore. Interferes with the credentialled’s narrative.

  3. Sleep well? Poor man is spinning so fast in his grave, he’s half-way to China.

  4. tree hugging sister says:

I’m sure he’s stopping occasionally for a quaff, knowing him.

  5. Yojimbo says:

Where is “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

    Oh, wait, my mistake.

  6. major dad says:

We could use a guy like him right now, actually with the state of things, a few more.

  7. Yojimbo says:

Yes, we could certainly use a Madison, Jefferson, Washington and Adams right now.

And the domestic landscape isn’t the only problem right now. We may be just months away from the Taliban gaining control of nuclear weapons in Pakistan.

  8. JeffS says:

We could use all of the Founding Fathers right now.

  9. nightfly says:

Geez laweez, I’d settle for Coolidge, Reagan, TR, and Truman at this point.

  10. major dad says:

    TR most certainly.

    “Sleep well, Dear Sir.”

Like LC Aggie Sith, I suspect it’s more likely he’s spinning in his grave.

I’d happily settle for a “give ’em Hell, Harry” – the rest were too nice for me. I think our main problem nowadays is…well, WIMPS. And followers. And those who are just too nice.

Anecdote: Back in the Clinton/Dole days… I asked a friend who he was voting for. He said Clinton. Dole was just too NICE – he’d be another Carter – just on the “other side”.

I agreed. (I voted Libertarian in that election – but, if I’d been forced, I’d have voted for… yes… Clintonistas. Dole would have been a disaster as big as Obama is now.

    Oh. And.
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.”
Prescient gentleman, that one. May he stop his spinning soon.
