    Hmmm. I went to the site because I was certain there was some backstory here, but nothing there. I’ve just never met any rich folks who would expend a thought about their waiters, much less take the time to snark at them on a receipt… UNLESS there was some serious provocation. It’d take more than just bad service, I think.

    I thought much the same, AliceH. OTOH, Breanna didn’t send the receipt in, someone sitting at the table did. That looks like a cell phone photo.

    Some people are a$$hole$ because they can be. So it’s possible that Breanna’s only crime is being unable to respond in a suitable fashion to this provocation.

    There’s more on the story at AOL. Seems the receipt was sent in by the young lad DINING with the big spender ~ a subordinate at the bank they both work at. He had a Twitter acct that this pic was posted to initially, but all have been discontinued, probably out of self-preservation impulses.

    Ebola has a few “having spent time in the service industry” stories he could share, so I’m willing to believe it could happen. Especially if one of these guys has a cocktail or two with lunch ~ they feel even more bullet-proof (whereas with me and Kcruella, we tip even better buzzed and we’re 20%ers to START with).

    I worked at a service station,while employees still pumped gas,and BMW drivers were the biggest as#holes as customers.I still see them weaving in and out of
    traffic and say to myself” BMW
    driver,of course”

    I’ve been on both sides – a waiter and a diner with rich banker types picking up the tab. Not a question of which side of the transaction is more likely to be an ass – that’s about break-even in my mind. It’s a question of which would be more likely to take such stupid, petty, ignorant action as this – and for that, [again, in my experience] it’s hands-down wait-staff.

    And fwiw, I was composing this comment before I saw Bingley’s link, which I will now read.

    I’m not ashamed to admit that my tipping pattern is more impacted by the size of my server’s Macaroons than the level of service she provides.

    This has happened to me, complete with the same “friendly advice.” The offender wasn’t a 1%er, either – just an everyday jerk.

    It’s not the money that causes it.
