Well, I was rooting for the wired haired dachshund.

  2. If you have to have a dachshund, he was DEFINATELY the dog to have ~ cute as a button.

  3. Mike Rentner says:

Yeah, normally I hate those dogs. They’ve been over run by poorly bred animals with horrendous back problems and no longer resemble the fierce badger hunters they once were.
But the wire haired one did have the grotesquely deep keel of a chest and its legs, albeit short, seemed appropriately attached to the body. I just thought it was refreshing to see a healthy looking dachshund.

  4. Ditto that! I also think part of it’s appeal, to me as a Scottie owner, is the wirey terrier look it has. Those poor wiener dogs have such a horrific list of inbred problems, it’s almost criminal to own one. You just perpetuate the abuses.

Murphy’s Law, as applied to cable TV.

    Oh, I meant to say, “didn’t have the grotesquely . . . ”

  7. Rob says:

They should declare a worldwide moratorium on showing any dog breed that has inherent genetic maladies due to generations of inbreeding, particularly those breeds prone to back and hip problems and allergies. A new standard should be established for those breeds.

My family has had two dachshunds, and they are the sweetest, most lovable doggies in the entire world. Poor little Schatzie did have to get put down when he was about 14 because of his back, but he was a very happy, loving dog. He was the dog we got when I was about 8 and grew up with, so it was very hard. I almost attacked the vet when he came out to take him away.

  9. We had two long-haired sweet things who lived next door to us in N.C. and just adored them.
Aw, Emily, I’m so sorry sweetie. I know exactly how you felt. But to have him until he was 14? That’s fabulous ~ lucky you. And lucky Schaztie to have Emily, who loved him so much.
