Miss New Jersey Takes It!!

The spelling crown, I mean.

She was a cool customer. I could barely stand to watch ~ tension so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Bingley Update and bump: I live in Jersey, so this is great, but I’m sorry, the best part of this for me is that the Canadian Champ was knocked out by “weltschmerz”. That’s just too delicious.

I’m pretty surprised at the number of foreign, especially German words. I think it is a bit of a stretch to claim that “Wehrmacht” is now an English word. Many of the other words were obscure jargon from academia. It’s strange that these are now entered into a spelling contest.

I can’t believe that girl missed that word, especially when they told her it was of German origin. Even I knew that if it sounded like V it started with W. Does German even have a V?
And her dad SPEAKS GERMAN! Argh. I think she just choked.
I couldn’t get over how pretty that one girl was that got third place. I bet there’s 13- and 14-year-old boys all around the country studying their spelling! 🙂

Well, I can see what you’re saying, Mike, but when I open up the 1980 edition of the Funk and Wagnalls dictionary sitting behind me I find “wehrmacht” in it, so I guess it’s kosher for the Bee.

  4. I would think “Wehrmacht” would be found in any U.S. history book text addressing Germany/WWII, right?

  5. And Lisa, you’re dead on ~ the third place girl was a babe ~ and so damn sweet, too!

I bet I’m the only one here who had to break out my Funk and Wagnalls for “weltschmerz”.
