NYC Mammies Nannies Suck

…in more ways than one. The headline for this piece

NYC Health Officials Move To Get Babies Off Bottle
New Campaign Launched To Deter Use Of Formula

…started the eye rolling, but dang if it isn’t the little things tucked into the article that just make ya cringe.

…Kim Williams-Mann breastfed her daughter for five years, and doesn’t agree with the ban.

Oh yeah, there are going to be some adults with some serious psychological issues raised by these LaLeche League crazies. The lactation nurse at the local hospital is one of them. They also advocate co-sleeping and wearing those slings so that the baby is never away from Mama. For mothers with even a hint of post-partum depression, those recommendations are a disaster – the poor women never get away from the little poop machines.

  2. As there’s nothing more unappetizing than a toddler ripping away at his mother’s clothes for a slurp, regardless of the surroundings, I can’t imagine what a fully articulate 5 year old sounds like demanding one. ::horrifiedshudder:: How revolting.
And you’re right about the pressure. Contrary to public opinion, not everyone WITH a chest was meant to use them as a feeding station.

The Nipple Nazis are just a horrid bunch.

I’ve seen it. They don’t “demand”, they just pop it out and latch on.
And yes, there are few things more frightening than realizing there are kindergartners still on the teat. Those kids are going to be so messed up.

  5. The_Real_JeffS says:

Those messed up kids will grow up to become members of the National Health Police, which I am sure will be formed by Congress sometime in 2008.

  6. Mr. Bingley says:

They’ll go straight from the mommy’s teat to the State’s.

The TV show “Little Britain” has a skit dealing with this very subject.
There are some forms of art that life should never imitate.

My younger sister sister had child number 2 much later than number 1(17 years). She was practically chased down the halls of the hospital whenever she went for the prenatal checkups by the crazed “lactation specialists”. Word had gotten out that she was going to use formula and they were not happy w/ her.

  9. Knowing said sister as I do, they little realize how lucky they were to escape unharmed…

One of those old “robber barron” guys, I can’t remember which one, suckled as an old man. He paid a lot of money to keep a regular supply of wet nurses. Talk about being creepy!

    Hmmmm.
You know. I always wondered what I do during my golden retirement years.
That sounds like a plan …….

All of this pro-breastfeeding militancy is getting tedious. There are absolutely some health advantages to the baby if nursing works out, but what is equally true (and never mentioned) is that many women cannot breastfeed easily or well. That is the reason why wetnurses (i.e. women who lactate easily) were used frequently in the days before formula, and one reason why so many babies used to die. Nature is not always perfect.
