Oh, By The Way…

If you thought it was getting better, it ain’t

The Japanese government’s nuclear safety agency has decided to raise the crisis level of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant accident from 5 to 7, the worst on the international scale.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency made the decision on Monday. It says the damaged facilities have been releasing a massive amount of radioactive substances, which are posing a threat to human health and the environment over a wide area.

Their rousing chant: “We’re not as bad as Chernobyl. Yet.”

What’s the Kanji character for “totally boned”?

  1. Kathy Kinsley says:

It’s NOT Chernobyl. It may be as bad (locally), but it’s NOT going to blow up the same way or send radioactive debris flying all over the place.

Go look at the actual document (pdf)which says:

“The Rating of the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES)
on the events in Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS), Tokyo Electric
Power Co. Inc. (TEPCO), caused by the Tohoku District – off the Pacific Ocean
Earthquake is temporarily assessed as Level 7, considering information obtained
    after March 18th.
However, the amount of discharged radioactive materials is approximately 10
percent of the Chernobyl accident which was assessed on the same level.”

  2. Kathy Kinsley says:

Mind you, even 10% of Chernobyl isn’t nice. But it’s NOT Chernobyl.

And, keep in mind that Chernobyl hadn’t had ANY natural disaster happen to it. It just went BOOM. Because of human error.

    One word- Godzilla.
