It’s about time the ACLU used their powers for good.

  2. JeffS says:

Indeed, the ACLU pisses me off. Constantly. But this is a good thing.

And for the gravy……it’ll piss off a bunch of lefties, you betcha!

  3. Yojimbo says:

The exception that proves the rule.

  4. Hope you don’t dislike what I am about to say; but you guys in America ought to thank your lucky stars every day of your lives BECAUSE you have the ACLU, and the Constitution it defends.

The Rev. Fred W. Phelps, along with his family, speaks the vilest rubbish at American funerals, and the Rev. Jones’ actions are both dangerous and absurd, but because you have a Constitution, and because they have the protection of that Constitution, as I wrote on my own site, ‘This is the Price of Free Speech’
    .

  5. JeffS says:

Mike, I can give you 10 reasons why the ACLU sits near the top of my personal s**t list.

Every healthy society needs active dissent. But the ACLU’s agenda has nothing to do with dissent, and everything to do with bashing America.

I expect that they filed this particular brief so that they can claim they are unbiased. I view that claim as total crap.

  6. Kathy Kinsley says:

Jeff, I generally agree with you, but this time I don’t. The ACLU takes on things that piss off both sides. They dont’, admittedly give a flying you-know-what about any liberties (in fact, may oppose them) aside from the First Amendment. But the are good on that.

Love them or hate them, they have their uses. (someone once (maybe or not Voltaire) said: “I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Whoever said it, I agree. And so does the ACLU. I respect them for that.

    arghh. preview comments please?
I’m queen of the typo gang, and I think I just proved that above. 🙁 Sorry. Hope it’s still readable.

  8. tree hugging sister says:

I’m with you, Kathy. I’ve never jumped in the ACLU torch and pitchfork crowd, just because they DO come through on both sides. Just not as often on ours.

  9. major dad says:

No fan of the ACLU here BUT, they do have their moments and this is one of them. This is such an abuse of the law as I have seen. How far is this from declaring any action by those not in charge as a possible instigator of violence by some group and therefore a crime? Scary stuff. ACLU helped squash one very egregious abuse here in P-cola, a local High School was blatantly having it’s teachers and Principal etc openly preach THEIR brand of religion to the student body and let’s just say if your religion wasn’t theirs you were burning in Hell. ACLU got that stopped. Thank goodness.

  10. JeffS says:

As Major Dad says, the ACLU has their moments, and this is most certainly one of them.

My point was, is, and will forever remain: those moments are few and far between for the ACLU.

So I am not holding my breath until the next one.

  11. greg newsom says:

The ACLU, 99% of the time, takes cases that weaken the American way of life.
Rarely do they take a case like this that protects the First amendment.I have received literature from them
during my liberal days that lays out their true agenda.
But, they must try to keep up appearances.
