The Greatest Horse Ever

A wonderful story from Sports Illustrated about a wonderful, magic horse. It brought many a tear to my eye and made me remember a magic spring 35 years ago.
The Derby

The Preakness
My God, the move he makes on the backstretch!

The Belmont
There’s nothing to do but watch in awe.

Best of luck, Big Brown, as you strive for history tomorrow.

  1. God, I LOVED that horse! And what a dollbaby he was. I cried my heart out when he left us and then again when I read that story. A horse, right?
    He was one of ‘them’.

  2. And Big Brown? We’re solidly behind you, big guy. Stay safe and tear them up. Let ’em see nuthin’ but cheek and horse shoe.

A line on Page 8 summed it up. The writer said he had “yielded a part of myself to that horse forever.” Yes. I’ve had some love for Alydar, Genuine Risk, and Barbaro but Secretariat owns me. That 73 Belmont is the most dazzling athletic performance of all time. Miss ya, Red.

Not to be…I just hope he’s OK.

  5. What Dave said, not what the weird, pr0nographic spammer said.

And as for Secretariat, I may not have been fortunate enough to have even been alive to watch him race, but even without his other accomplishments, what he did in the Belmont alone is enough to consider him far and away the greatest racehorse of all time. Simply untouchable. There will be another Triple Crown winner someday, but I doubt anyone will ever, EVER witness another race anything like that one.

Weren’t even alive, Dave? I think I hate you. 🙂 Too bad that clip wasn’t in color. In fact, I’m quite disappointed there aren’t more color pictures of him on the web. You should have seen that big red horse, Dave. He was absolutely magnificent.

I was a wee, wee bairn, but I do remember the famous picture of Ron Turcotte looking back along the rail at Belmont, wondering where the rest of the race had gone. Just unbelievable.

  9. Mr. Bingley says:

    This picture, ‘Fly?
    Just amazing.
I love the announcers call of the race…
“Secretariat is running like a treeeemendous machine!”
    “Secretariat is running all alone!”

I think there is another one with him looking back between his legs, Mr B.

    That’s a great story.
