The Stupid Is Strong In This One

It goes deep to the bone

DRAPER, Utah (CBS Las Vegas) – One Utah school district believes a cougar mascot would be insensitive to women.

The Canyons School District overrode the students top choice of a cougar mascot for their high school that is to be completed in 2013.

Would-be Corner Canyon High School students chose the Cougars as their mascot — a name principal Mary Bailey said carries an ugly connotation that is disrespectful to women.

Please note the definition in the very next sentence that Mary Bailey says “carries an ugly connotation and is disrespectful to women”

In popular culture, the cougar is a sexually aggressive middle-aged woman who attracts younger men.

I’m just not seeing either the ugly connotation or the disrespect here. Maybe it’s me. Hell, I’m sure it is.

So what did these defenders of democracy declare by fiat over the name the students voted for?

The school board, which consists of six men and one woman, thought the Charger would be more appropriate, which was on the ballot but failed to appeal to students as the cougar had.

Charger. As in, you know, a woman who spends too much time at the mall or on Amazon and uses her credit card so much that she’s memorized the numbers. How demeaning.

I have a suggestion.

Maybe they should choose a truly safe, pure, non-hurtful name.

Like “Biatch”.

Why not just eliminate sports at the schools altogether? Teams that lose might get their feelings hurt.

(And frankly, I’m more offended by the idea that ALL women would be offended by the “cougar” name. Very few women actually follow that lifestyle, and some of that rest of us roll our eyes at them.)

  2. JeffS says:

Don’t tell Washington State University about this. Those Cougar fans can get very angry when provoked…..

  3. Gary from Jersey says:

Just give all those kids a trophy and forget actually competing for them. Thaat should make her feel better. Stupid woman.

  4. Mr. Bingley says:

What I’m just not grasping is why “women” should be offended by the “cougar” moniker. It’s not a term that applies to all women; it applies to a very specific, very small group of women who specifically choose it by their actions.

I guess a pussy cat would have been out of the question as an alternative.

  6. ricki says:

What Bingley said. I’m in the age group to which “cougars” belong, but no way in Hell am I a cougar: my parents raised me to behave better than that.

Perhaps this is related to the trend of “we don’t want to make people who behave badly FEEL bad about that behavior, now do we?”

What’s the mascot going to be? A big plate? About as stupid as it gets but we are talking “educators”.

  8. Mike says:

Perhaps they should forget about animals, and choose inanimate objects instead. I doubt anyone would object to items used in manufacturing and construction. It might even encourage women to enter into a more diverse set of career fields, too. I vote for “Hose”.

Imagine… “The Hose won the playoffs”. “Let’s go Hose!” “I’m a huge fan of the Hose”. “I’m wearing some Hose merchandise”

    Oh, wait…

There’s a team in Cuero, Texas called the Gobblers. You should see the banners when they battle with the Beeville Trojans. Neither one of these teams have ever prevailed over the Falls City Beavers. It’s messy. Apparently PC hasn’t sunk in very far in Texas.

Just curious, but what behavior do you consider to be “badly”? Is it bad behavior for a woman to desire a younger man? If so, am I a bad man for finding young women desirable?

  11. ricki says:

No, it’s more the aggressiveness and the multiple partners. And the fact that a few of them have apparently thrown over stable, long-term relationships for “a bit of fun.”

  12. Mr. Bingley says:

…and then they are shocked SHOCKED when someone turns around and does the same to them.

  13. nightfly says:

This is an Onion story waiting to happen.

“‘Cougars’ mascot rejected as offensive; team now known as ‘Hitlers'”

  14. Mori says:

I’ve been a Cougar, Viking, Lancer, Comet, Gaucho, and Poet.

Me thinks the lady school board member protests too much. Guilty minds…

  15. JeffS says:

To show just how stupid this is, there’s a long standing joke about WSU, here in the Pacific Northwest:

“How do you keep a cougar out of your backyard?”

    “Put up a goal post.”

    boom-tish!

  16. JeffS says:

And those school board idiots should be glad they don’t live in Richland, Washington.

Can you imagine the state of their health, living with this horror, day in and day out?

  17. Gunslinger says:

I vote their mascot should be the middle finger in (dis)honor of their idiotic school board.

  18. JeffS says:

Obligatory, but yet oddly appropriate (some NSFW language):

Hitler reacts to the Giants beating the Packers.

  19. Julie says:

So, the University of Houston is being insensitive too? I can tell you, there are a LOT stupider mascot names, says the UC Santa Cruz alumni… 🙂

  20. Greg Newson says:

She’s probably a (naughty term used in a naughty way – bing). They control the schools and city governments almost every in the US.Is that insensitve? No,just true.

  21. JeffS says:

Ummmmm…looks like I dropped the Hitler link in the wrong post. My bad.
