Today It’s “Iwo To”

They’ve called it something different for the longest time.
And on this day in 1945…

…somebody pretty terrific planted a flag there.

I wish i could thank every one of them for the sacrifices they made.

  2. The_Real_JeffS says:

    Amen, Mr. Bingley.

  3. Gunslinger says:

    Amen, indeed.

  4. Jim - PRS says:

It’s a shame that the cruds in Berkeley can’t understand that they planted that flag for them too.

  5. What Jim said. What Bings, Jeff, Gunslinger, and Sis said, too.
And Sis, give a big hug to Major Dad too, and thank him for his years of service, ‘k?

  6. Skyler says:

The image of personal strength, team work, existing in a hellish environment, anonymity, and the flag suspended over them, not completely unfurled, about to be whipped open briskly, against a background that shows nothing but a stark and empty horizon.
I really think this will be considered the best photograph ever taken for the next couple of thousand years.

  7. Mr. Bingley says:

You may well be right, Skyler.

  8. Aw, Ken…course. (Somebody’s got to hug Jarhead Skyler, too.)
And I think Skyler’s dead on, too. It’s so bleak and so embued with hope at the same time. It just oozes what it says at the base of the memorial (“The entire cost of the statue and developing the memorial site was $850,000–all donated by U.S. Marines, former Marines, Marine Corps Reservists, friends of the Marine Corps, and members of the Naval Service. No public funds were used for this memorial.”) ~
