When Obama Loses Gore Vidal…

You just know he’s struggling

Last year he famously switched allegiance from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama during the Democratic nomination process for president. Now, he reveals, he regrets his change of heart. How’s Obama doing? “Dreadfully. I was hopeful. He was the most intelligent person we’ve had in that position for a long time. But he’s inexperienced. He has a total inability to understand military matters. He’s acting as if Afghanistan is the magic talisman: solve that and you solve terrorism.” America should leave Afghanistan, he says. “We’ve failed in every other aspect of our effort of conquering the Middle East or whatever you want to call it.” The “War on Terror” was “made up”, Vidal says. “The whole thing was PR, just like ‘weapons of mass destruction’. It has wrecked the airline business, which my father founded in the 1930s. He’d be cutting his wrists. Now when you fly you’re both scared to death and bored to death, a most disagreeable combination.”

Mind you, it needs to be said that if you have the stomach to read the rest of this piece you’ll discover (if for some odd reason you don’t already know) how totally whacked in the head Gore Vidal is.

It’s almost like reading something by Lyndon Larouche.

you know, I’ve heard the name “Gore Vidal” for decades it seems, but I’ve never known why he is famous. He’s like the Paris Hilton of another day, famous for being famous.

  2. He was a writer. Wrote some stuff, so I hear. Been whacked in the head for at least 50 years.

  3. nightfly says:

His dad invented the airline business? Is that like Algore inventing the internet, or like him inventing global warming?

  4. Gary from Jersey says:

Way to insult Larouche. Vidal’s been utterly mad for years: patrician, paranoid and a laughingstock. Larouche is only a pseudo-intellectual cultist and thief. His supporters can be very entertaining while you’re waiting on line at Motor Vehicles.

  5. Yojimbo says:

Well I’m indebted to him because I hadn’t realized that our intention was to conquer the Middle East-or whatever you want to call it.
We could have done that in 1991 if we had wanted to.

  6. Mark says:

Was there a time Vidal was relevant? Other than being a veteran of the Mike Douglass show…

  7. But really? Who gives a shit what he thinks about Obama? I wanna know where he stands on the burning question of our time ~ did he sign the “Free Roman Polanski” petition?

  8. NJ Sue says:

Vidal thinks that Timothy McVeigh was some sort of misunderstood genius (like Norman Mailer’s fascination with that murderer Abbott). I think we can safely disregard his other opinions as well. (THS-I am drinking a glass of vino rosso in your honor and hoping you are comfy).
