Make No Mistake ~ I DESPISE These Guys…

…on every other day of the year. But THIS time, I’m rootin’ for them to win 100%.

Florida State to sue NCAA over mascot-nickname rule
TALLAHASSEE – The NCAA can forget about Florida State University changing its “Seminoles” nickname any time soon.
Stung by an NCAA decision Friday to ban schools using Native American names and symbols from hosting championship events, Florida State President T.K. Wetherell said he will sue the organization for an “outrageous and insulting” decision.
“This university will forever be associated with the “unconquered” spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida,” said Wetherell, who played football for the Seminoles 40 years ago…
…Friday’s decision comes after the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s governing council unanimously approved in mid-June a resolution in support of Florida State’s “Seminoles” nickname.
“It is unconscionable that the Seminole Tribe of Florida has been ignored,” Wetherell said in a four-paragraph statement released by the university.
“That the NCAA would now label our close bond with the Seminole people as culturally ‘hostile and abusive’ is both outrageous and insulting,” Wetherell said. “I intend to pursue all legal avenues to ensure that this unacceptable decision is overturned.”

(Maybe Lisa’s Illini should join in a class action. Victory loves company, n’est pas?)
UPDATE: Scathing commentary from Michael Ventre at MSNBC.

If you’re offended, you’re offended. That’s the result of your own sensibilities, your own cultural, social, racial and ethnic filters. It’s preposterous for me to tell somebody that they’re overreacting to a perceived insult, and to get over it.
I just know this: Each person chooses to be offended.
I happen to be an Italian American. My favorite movie is “The Godfather” and I love “Goodfellas” and “The Sopranos” as well. I recognize that the characters and storylines in those productions represent a tiny, albeit well-chronicled and somewhat romanticized, criminal element within the Italian-American population. I feel that if someone out there watches “The Godfather” and comes to the conclusion that all Italians are in the mafia, then that person is an idiot and I don’t care what they think anyway.
In those aforementioned cases and others like them, I choose not to be offended.

Indeed.

    THS,
I totally agree with you about being against FSU any day but today. The whole argument tires me.
My good old Yellow Jackets have nothing to worry about from the NCAA as far as mascots go, but I do worry about how badly FSU will beat us this year…as they do every year….
    sigh

  2. The Real JeffS says:

I’m not a sports fan, but I am rooting for the Seminoles this year! Whup them nauseating PC buttheads at the NCAA! Woo-hoo!

  3. Thank God someone’s pissed enough to fight it instead of rolling over. It was kind of a hoot here, with the article asking if Notre Dame’s feisty leprechaun was racist, as I noted in the post below. Being die-hard ‘there’s always next year’ Notre Dame fans is a good chunk of the reason we spit when we hear ‘Bowden’ or ‘FSU’. The speaking of either leaves a vile, foul taste that lasts for years….
    piTU!

Yay! I hope U of I does jump on in.
I swear, this pissed me off so bad, I can’t even discuss it rationally. I start foaming at the mouth.

I’m waiting for the NCAA to suddenly start cracking down on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. How belittling! There aren’t any teams named “Shrieking Jihadi” or “Battlin’ Buddhas”! I mean, as long as they have plenty of time to waste…

  6. While I agree with you on the idiocy of this ‘statement’ by the NCAA, I just may have to delete you from my blogroll knowing you despise my team 😉
My wife is the ‘Nole (my alma mater is Semper Fidelis), and talk about getting her spitting mad.

  7. my alma mater is Semper Fidelis
As is mine, OO-RAH!! And no hasty deblogrolling, puh leez!! I will try, try, try not to give offense or be too disparaging or even snarkily gloating, should success come miraculously upon my Irish. As the college football season starts to rumble, if you and the lovely Mrs. Marble will promise to do the same when Notre Dame embarasses itself, I will bite my fingertips and never type ‘despise’ in the same sentence as FSU. I solemnly promise.
What a lovely blog world we live in, that ‘Noles and Notre’s can all get along. Someone send us to NoKo ~ we’ll settle that, too.
Diptera ~ as far as the Demon Deacons (whom I’ve always loved for their mascot) they (if I remember correctly) ran afoul of the evangelical Baptist affiliation that was part of the school’s founding and the ‘Demon’ had a bit to do with it. They parted ways in the mid-80’s.

  8. Ken Summers says:

So… Indian names are right out because they belittle Indians… but “Rebels” is out because it glorifies them? [eyes cross painfully]

  9. (Please, Mr. Summers ~ do nothing painful!)

This is an AWESOME op-ed piece:
    http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/12333609.htm
The NCAA executive committee is a collection of school presidents who often speak with forked tongues and make decisions as if they had trouble earning their GEDs.
If they think the nickname ban is so significant, maybe the NCAA headquarters should be moved out of Indianapolis.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  11. I’m shocked, shocked that they’re still in Indiana, as sensitive as they are to people’s feelings. Like, there’s nothing more hateful, hostile and abusive than asking…
    Hoosier Daddy?
    …now is there?
    Buuwhahahahahaha!!!
    Good one, Lisa!
