Laws And Truth Are For Little People

This whole Rahm Emanuel story is getting delish. He jumps like a rat from a sinking ship resigns from his post as White House Chief of Staff to run for Mayor of Chicago.

Except he may not be legally eligible

The first question isn’t: Can Rahm win? It’s: Can Rahm run?

Sunday, Rahm Emanuel announced in a video posted on a website that he is preparing to run for mayor of Chicago. But two of Chicago’s top election lawyers say the state’s municipal code is crystal clear that a candidate for mayor must reside in the town for a year before the election.

That doesn’t mean they must simply own a home in the city that they rent out to someone else. They must have a place they can walk into, keep a toothbrush, hang up their jacket and occasionally sleep, the lawyers say.

…But when Emanuel agreed to become chief of staff, the family moved out to D.C. and the home was rented out to another family that now refuses to break the lease and clear the way for Emanuel to move back in. Emanuel could come back to Chicago to vote, but he could not stop at the house he owns on his way to the polling place, and that does not meet the residency test to run for mayor, Nally said.

But really, Chicago, Rahm loves you and he’s very glad to be “here.”

As long as you have a Clintonian definition of “here”

Rahm Emanuel kicked off his campaign for Mayor of Chicago with a homecoming video, filmed in front of a bookshelf with a vase and a family photograph.

“I was born here and my wife Amy and I raised our three children here,” he says. “I’m glad to be home.”

But an Emanuel spokeswoman, Lori Goldberg, confirms that the video itself was actually filmed in Washington, D.C., in the offices of AKPD media, the firm founded by David Axelrod.

OO-Rah, My Sisters!

…As new faces in an American counterinsurgency campaign, the female Marines, who volunteered for the job, were to meet with Pashtun women over tea in their homes, assess their need for aid, gather intelligence, and help open schools and clinics.

They have done that and more, and as their seven-month deployment in southern Afghanistan nears an end their “tea as a weapon” mission has been judged a success. But the Marines, who have been closer to combat than most other women in the war, have also had to use real weapons in a tougher fight than many expected.

It’s a GREAT, fascinating, very well done read.

These WM’s are something else. Damn, they make me cry.

Another Fun Weekend Near The Border

Grenades and 34 murders

Northern Mexico was shaken by a weekend of violence, with 34 deaths blamed on drug cartels and a series of grenade attacks that injured a dozen people, officials said Sunday.

Twelve people were hurt in a late night grenade attack at a busy plaza outside Monterrey, according to officials who said it was one of four bombings to rock the industrial border city over the weekend.

Authorities said Sunday that the grenade was thrown by unidentified assailants at about 11 pm Saturday (0400 GMT Sunday) near the town hall in Guadalupe, a suburb of the bustling city near the border with the United States.

Gaza is safer.

Feeling Kinda Queasy at the News

…but I guess I better have it looked at NOW, while I still CAN

The U.S. healthcare reform law will worsen a shortage of physicians as millions of newly insured patients seek care, the Association of American Medical Colleges said on Thursday.

…”While previous projections showed a baseline shortage of 39,600 doctors in 2015, current estimates bring that number closer to 63,000, with a worsening of shortages through 2025,” the group said in a statement.

Now remember, dynamics HAVE changed here ~ making UP this shortfall will all be predicated on people wanting to actually a) finance some higher education b) finance a buttload MORE higher education to go into medicine, which now has an everchanging government payscale and rulebook attached to it. Doc Hollywood is as much a goner as a DeBakey.

From a blogging standpoint, I’m starting to think we need an “Another LIE Busted UNEXPECTED!!!” category for the rest of this adminisration’s run…

An Armed Citizen…

…is a living citizen

A pizza deliveryman who shot two would-be robbers to death in east Charlotte said Tuesday that he didn’t draw his concealed pistol until the last possible second, when he thought he would be killed.

Throughout the robbery attempt, as the men hit and pistol-whipped him inside a cooler at an east Charlotte Pizza Hut, the driver said he kept his right elbow pinned tightly against his body – holding a Glock 22 under his shirt and out of view.

He said he didn’t want to use the gun unless he was forced to. But as one of the men lifted his shirt, nearly exposing the gun, the deliveryman opened fire.

The two men killed – Gregory James Hardy and Dauntrae Wallace – were both 21-year-old convicted felons, one on probation and one awaiting trial on unrelated charges.

This poor driver is a true hero and a model of calm, patient restraint.

God bless him.
