…Republicans also say that while Romney and Ryan haven’t necessarily been as visible in recent days, they have been working hard behind the scenes to shore up support with donors and political allies who became skittish after recent missteps. At a closed-door conference meeting Thursday with the House Republican caucus, Ryan urged his colleagues to rally behind the campaign.

“This is going to be an up and down race,” Ryan said, according to a Republican aide in the room. “Three polls came out that have us within one point. They are going to [try to] distract us.”

That handholding — coupled with loyalty on Capitol Hill to Ryan, who is seen as by legislators as “one of their own” — has prevented the type of defections one would normally expect with a struggling presidential campaign, strategists say. And by smoothing the waters, the ticket should be more free in the coming weeks to focus solely on meeting voters.

You would think Romney was 10 or 20 points down, the way they’re constantly spinning this for those I assume to be undecided or waffling in the audience.

The Obama administration is weighing the release of blind Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman — the spiritual adviser to the 1993 World Trade Center bombers — in a stunning goodwill gesture toward Egypt that has touched off a political firestorm, officials said yesterday.

The Egyptian government “asked for his release,” an administration source told The Post — and Rep. Peter King (R-LI) confirmed the request is being considered.

The White House, State Department and Justice Department each issued statements denying any deal is in the works, but,

“There’s no way to believe anything they say,” said Andrew McCarthy, the former assistant US attorney who prosecuted Abdel-Rahman. “I believe there may already be a nod-and-wink agreement in place.”

KWAME HOLMAN: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney moved today to get past criticism that he’s written off half the country. Romney’s been taking fire for saying last May that nearly half of Americans don’t pay income taxes and don’t care about tax cuts, so he can’t expect their support.

Today, in Atlanta, he insisted average Americans would do far better under him than under President Obama.

MITT ROMNEY (R): The question in this campaign is not who cares about the poor and middle class. I do. He does. The question is, who can help the poor and middle class. I can. He can’t. He’s proven it in four years.

(CHEERING AND APPLAUSE)

KWAME HOLMAN: Romney also cited a 1998 speech in which Mr. Obama said he believes in redistribution of wealth to make sure everybody’s got a shot.

But White House spokesman Jay Carney dismissed the criticism.

JAY CARNEY, White House: All of us who follow politics and policy, whether we’re on this side or your side of the podium, have seen circumstances like this, where a campaign is having a very bad day or a very bad week.

And in circumstances like that, there are efforts made — sometimes desperate efforts made — to change the subject.

…and the Libyan Interior Ministry official who was in charge of the investigation was fired Monday.

(CBS News) The strategy for getting U.S. forces out of Afghanistan depends on training Afghan soldiers and police to protect the country themselves, but on Monday the U.S. military suspended most joint field operations with Afghan forces because so many Americans are being killed by the men they are training.

Afghan government troops — our allies — have turned their guns on NATO forces 36 times this year, killing 51, most of them Americans. That is more attacks than the last two years combined.

Source: State Department in Talks to Transfer ‘Blind Sheikh’ to Egypt; DOJ Denies

The U.S. State Department is currently in negotiations with the Egyptian government for the transfer of custody of Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as “the Blind Sheikh,” for humanitarian and health reasons, a source close to the the Obama administration told TheBlaze.

The Department of Justice, however, told TheBlaze that Rahman is serving a life sentence and is not considered for possible release. Previous calls to the State Department were referred to the Department of Justice and so far, the State Department has neither confirmed nor denied the report.

I’m sure it’s all spontaneous discussions in group think.

On Tuesday, Sean Smith, a Foreign Service Information Management Officer assigned to the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, typed a message to the director of his online gaming guild:

”Assuming we don’t die tonight. We saw one of our ‘police’ that guard the compound taking pictures.”

The consulate was under siege, and within hours, a mob would attack, killing Smith along with three others, including the U.S. ambassador.

US diplomats in Beirut burning classified material

WASHINGTON (AP) — Diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut have started to destroy classified material as a security precaution amid anti-American protests in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa.

A State Department status report obtained Monday by The Associated Press said the Beirut embassy had “reviewed its emergency procedures and is beginning to destroy classified holdings.” It also said that local Lebanese employees were sent home early due to protests by the militant Shiite group Hezbollah over an anti-Muslim film produced in the U.S.

Oh, and shoot! There we go with the “film” thing again.

2 Marines Killed

And 6 harriers destroyed during an attack on Camp Bastion.

Insurgent fighters wearing U.S. Army uniforms breached the defenses of the main British-run air base in southern Afghanistan on Friday. Firing guns and rockets and apparently triggering suicide vests, the attackers killed two U.S. Marines and damaged or destroyed several hangars and fueling facilities. Before they were all killed or captured, the insurgents also managed to destroy six U.S. Marine Corps jet fighters and “significantly” damage two others, landing a shocking blow against NATO air power in the region.

I’m a little amazed that this was able to happen after Egypt, Libya, Tunisia…

Oh, and here’s a nice factoid for you

Startlingly, the six destroyed Harriers represent no less than 1/15th of the Marines’ entire inventory of the versatile, vertical-landing jets.
